A school custodian fired a replica Civil War musket in the parking lot of Massapequa High School last week as students completed their SAT exams in the building, according to Nassau police and district officials.
Gregg Tucker, 70, of Lindenhurst, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, police said. He was allegedly removing the musket, which did not contain ammunition, from the trunk of a car when it discharged at about 11 a.m. last Saturday and emitted a loud noise, district officials told parents in a letter.

Christina Mathieson-Segura was still reeling from the news that she had breast cancer when she met Dr. Melissa Fana, a breast surgical oncologist, who made her a promise.
"She said ‘When you walk out of here, you’re going to take that worry and that fear and you’re going to leave it in my hands,’ " Mathieson-Segura recalled. " ‘And I promise this year is going to be a speed bump in your life. You are going to come out of this and be fine.’ "
"I could feel she cared about me as a person and I wasn't just a number on file," Mathieson-Segura, 61, of Bethpage, said. "She always really just loved on us — all of her patients."
Fana, 48, died on April 16 after a battle with lymphoma, leaving a legacy of compassion and care across Long Island.

The family of a Nesconset teenager prone to "violent, intense and emotionally/psychologically unstable episodes," who is accused of fatally shooting his former girlfriend after she ended their relationship, kept an unsecured gun within his reach that he used to kill her, says a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the 18-year-old victim's parents.
The suit, filed earlier this year by Ryan Finn and Cliantha Miller-Finn, the West Sayville-based parents of Emily Finn, describes in detail the hours before Austin Lynch allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend in the back of the head on Nov. 26, 2025, the day before his 18th birthday, as she was looking to leave his home.
