Bengaluru: AISA organised “Campuses to Streets: Is Democracy Under Siege?”, bringing together students, activists and academics to discuss dissent, democracy and what speakers described as growing attacks on public education and democratic spaces under the BJP-led government.
JNUSU Secretary Com. Danish Ali recalled the courage and legacy of Gauri Lankesh, warning that activists and dissenters increasingly face repression for speaking against the government. She criticised the growing privatisation and saffronisation of education and said student participation in politics was essential to defending democratic rights.
Sociologist Dr Lakshmipathi C G spoke about caste discrimination and communal divisions within educational institutions, saying classrooms were increasingly turning into “caste-rooms” and “communal-rooms.” He also criticised the growing privatisation of education in Karnataka and the weakening of scientific thinking.
Author Meena Kandasamy spoke on censorship and the shrinking space for dissent, referring to Gauri Lankesh’s assassination as a chilling moment for activists and journalists. She argued that attempts to label and delegitimise dissenting voices were being used to suppress ideas that challenged the dominant political ideology.
The programme also saw the launch of AISA’s booklet, “Education Under Siege,” examining the condition of education in India with a special focus on Karnataka. The evening concluded with a cultural performance by AISA members and drew an audience of over 150 people.
