On Sunday morning, BBC Scotland broadcast a ten-minute discussion about “queer identities”- with virtually no meaningful challenge to the terminology or claims being made.

Presenter Tony Kearney was interviewing Alice Oseman, author of the Heartstopper graphic novels, which centre on a romance between two teenage boys and have been adapted into a popular Netflix series.

Kearney praised Heartstopper for bringing terminology such as “aromantic” and “asexual” into mainstream media and “normalising” identities that might otherwise be marginalised.

But he didn’t clarify what those terms - or, indeed, the phrase “queer identities” - actually mean. Nor did he acknowledge that some of these labels, and the ideas underpinning them, are contested.

When Oseman referred to legal rulings being “fought against”, the trans community being under intense scrutiny and public discourse causing trans people “so much harm”, Kearney didn’t ask which rulings, what scrutiny or which discourse she meant.

These claims were allowed to pass as settled facts.

In a ten-minute interview, there was just one passing reference to “pushback” before the discussion moved swiftly to countries where homosexuality is illegal - an important issue, but a different one from contested ideas about gender identity.

This was broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sunday Morning, described as:

“Two hours of music and conversation with a faith and ethical perspective. Taking the week’s events to ask what they say about our values and beliefs.”

Just to be clear: the issue isn’t that the BBC discussed Heartstopper.

It’s that contested ideas were presented without context or challenge - and without a single genuinely probing question.

What are children being taught about sex and gender in primary schools?

Over the last few weeks I've been investigating this for @MailOnline speaking to parents, governors and teachers - and looking at lesson plans, book lists and training materials.

Today's investigation looks at a new report from @SEENPublishing identifying more than 60 children's books promoting ideas such as being "born in the wrong body".

It also examines the continuing influence of the No Outsiders programme, founded by Andrew Moffat.

The programme aims to teach children about the characteristics protected by the Equality Act, including race, religion and sexual orientation.

Some will remember the protests over No Outsiders in Birmingham in 2019 - specifically around LGBTQ+ materials aimed at young children. But the programme hasn't gone away. Between 2020 and 2023, No Outsiders reached almost 30,000 children and trained more than 9,000 teachers across hundreds of schools.

The parents I spoke to believe schools should encourage kindness and tolerance, but question why primary-aged children need lessons about gender identities or the idea of being "born in the wrong body". These are conversations they feel should be led by parents - not schools or external training providers.

Andrew Moffat and the Excelsior Multi Academy Trust - an eight-school academy trust which appears to employ him to deliver No Outsiders training - were approached multiple times for comment but did not respond.

Incredibly the BBC has
updated this report to INCLUDE Heather Herbert’s ‘she’ and ‘her’ pronouns, moving from a neutral stance to a gender affirming one.
We can only surmise that activists within the BBC ‘had a word’ or changed it themselves. Disappointing, not surprising.

New laws in Afghanistan, introduced by the Taliban, mean that men can now marry girls at any age – there is no limit. Male relatives can arrange this with other men, and it’s only once the girls reach puberty that, in extremely limited circumstances, they can ask a court to dissolve the marriage. What’s happening in that country is horrific, and it begs the question why Amnesty are not putting all of their resources into tackling this latest child abuse atrocity.

If you haven't heard of @JournalismSEEN it's a network of journalists and content creators committed to promoting accurate, impartial and evidence-based reporting on sex and gender.

What does that mean in practice?

It means asking awkward questions when journalism falls short. For example:

- Crimes committed by males being reported using female pronouns
- One-sided media coverage on issues that relate sex and gender - that feels more like activism and journalism
- The failure of mainstream media outlets to cover contentious stories that relate to sex and gender

Why am I so fired up about this topic? Partly because returning to journalism after several years away has been a bit of a shock to the system.

Aside from the stagnant freelance rates, I hadn't expected to find journalism itself struggling with questions of truth, evidence and accuracy.

Of all the professions, it ought to be the one most committed to following the facts - wherever they lead. And however uncomfortable they are.

Yet that is where we are.

During the past 28 months, @leng_cath and SEEN in Journalism members have submitted consultation responses, engaged with press regulators, met editors and correspondents, lodged complaints, contributed to media debates and articles and hosted events - including a parliamentary briefing on the proposed puberty blockers trial, earlier this year.

We've achieved a great deal, but there's an opportunity to build on that work by adding education and training to what we do.
