भोगल्या दु:खाचे आनंदी गाणे गाण्याची ताकद असलेल्या... जय शारदे.. वागेश्वरी ची प्रार्थना गाणाऱ्या... कॅब्रे, लावणी, भक्ती गीत, ओवी आणि अभंगासह भावगीत, चित्रपट गीत ही विलक्षण ताकदीने गाणाऱ्या... भाषेची बंधने तोडून २० पेक्षा जास्त भाषेत गाणाऱ्या... स्वतःच्या आयुष्यात आलेल्या प्रत्येक संकटाला लिलया हरवणाऱ्या... आणि भाऊबीजेला "सोनियाच्या ताटी उजळल्या ज्योती..." अशी अजरामर ओवाळणी गाणाऱ्या आशाताई गेल्या.

माझ्यासाठी तर मा��ी प्रिय बहिण मी आज गमावली... साक्षात सरस्वतीच्या वीणेची झंकार आज शांत झाली. मला भाऊ म्हणून उदंड प्रेम त्यांनी दिले. मी आज काय गमावले हे शब्दात सांगता ये��ार नाही...माझ्या जगण्यातील श्रीमंती मात्र आज गमावली...

त्यांच्या असंख्य भेटी माझ्या हृदयात साठवलेल्या आहेत... काही दिवसांपूर्वीची ही एक संस्मरणीय भेट !

I have a long habit of pulling out my banjo and playing holiday songs while waiting for flights during the holiday season. These arrangements appeared and developed over the course of several years of airport holiday play and eventually some of them - in 2008, with the help of The Flecktones, turned into the album Jingle All The Way. Gulzar, Parichay, Sitar & Kartik Kumar [father of @niladri_kumar ]

Kartik Kumar remained a close associate in the music of Burman Da and Pancham, from 'Piya Tose' to Mahbooba’s Gori Tori 'Pajanariya'. His contribution was not limited to songs; it extended deeply into the film’s visual storytelling. The use of his sitar in Parichay is one of the finest examples of this.

I remember the scene where, after Pran leaves, Jeetendra asks to open Sanjeev Kumar’s room. The room lies in darkness; in one corner, a sitar, harmonium, tabla, and other instruments rest as if in a long sleep. No one has touched them for years.

Jeetendra opens the door, letting the light in. When he begins to play the sitar lying there, Jaya and the children come running into the room, following the flow of notes like the children of Hamelin. On the wall hangs a picture of Sanjeev’s father with a sitar in his hands, and in that moment, Jeetendra unknowingly steps into the role of the father figure that the children had long missed.

The music room, now filled with light, seems to bathe in the rain of the sitar’s melody. That rain reaches deep into the children’s hearts. It is a rare moment where cinema and music become one, carrying even the audience along with them.

Director Gulzar used Kartik Kumar’s sitar beautifully to create that spell of music and emotion. Another memorable moment from the film is the song Mitwa Bole Meethe Bain, adorned with the magic of Sanjeev Kumar’s expressive eyes. Oh, those dancing eyes!
It is almost unfair of Gulzar to break that spell midway by stopping the song.

There’s also a story from the set of Parichay. While shooting Sanjeev Kumar with the sitar, someone pointed out that the instrument was being held incorrectly. The remark stayed with Gulzar. From that day, he began learning the sitar himself, studied it for eight years, and later collaborated with Pandit Ravi Shankar in Meera.

His 'parichay', his introduction to playing music and the sitar was something he truly lived, a journey that carried his art toward completeness.

कार्तिक कुमार, बर्मन दा और पंचम के संगीत में, 'पिया तोसे' से शुरु होके महबूबा के 'गोरी तोरी पैंजनिया' तक साथी रहे और उनके संगीत में केवल गीतों में ही नहीं, फ़िल्म के दृश्यों मे भी इनका योगदान गज़ब का रहा है| ’परिचय’ में कार्तिक कुमार के सितार का प्रयोग उनके योगदान का एक बढ़िया उदाहरण है|

मुझे वो सीन याद है जिसमें प्राण के बाहर जाने के बाद जीतेन्द्र, संजीव कुमार का कमरा खुलवाते हैं| कमरा अंधेरे में नहाया प��़ा है, एक कोने में सितार, हारमोनियम, तबला और अन्य साज जैसे किसी लंबी नींद में पड़े हैं | बरसों से किसी ने इनकी सुध नहीं ली|

जीतेन्द्र सबसे पहले बाहर का दरवाजा खोल के रोशनी के लिये रास्ता बनाते हैं और उनके वहां पड़े सितार को जब वो बजाना शुरु करते हैं तो हैमलिन के बच्चों की टोली की तरह जया और बच्चे, उन स्वर लहिरियों के पीछे भागे-भागे कमरे में आते हैं| दीवार पर सितार लिये संजीव, उनके पिता की तस्वीर दी���ार पे टंगी है, और जीतेन्द्र उसी सितार के साथ उन बच्चों के लिये अनजाने में वही अभिभावक बन जाते हैं जिसकी कमी उनके जीवन में सबसे बड़ी थी|

पूरा संगीतकक्ष आज रोशनी से नहाया हुआ, सितार से निकले सुरों की वर्षा में भीग रहा है, ये बारिश बच्चों के अन्तर्मन तक गहरी उतर रही है| सिनेमा और संगीत के अनूठे मेल के जादू की इक मिसाल, जहां दर्शक भी किरदारों के साथ में बह रहे हैं |

निर्देशक गुलज़ार ने ‘सुर वर्षा’ क��� प्रभाव के लिये कार्तिक कुमार के सितार का बेजोड़ उपयोग किया है, उस दृश्य के लिये.. या फिर इक और गीत है फ़िल्म में, संजीव की आंखों की पुतलियों के नृत्य के जादू से सजा 'मितवा बोले मीठे बैन'.. Oh! Those dancing eyes!

निर्देशक गुलज़ार से इस एक बात पे ख़फ़ा होना बनता है के फ़िल्म में रचे उस तिलिस्म को तोड़ते हुए वो गीत को बीच में रोक देते हैं|
लेकिन सितार और गुलज़ार को लेकर ‘परिचय’ के सैट पे एक बड़ी दिलचस्प घटना हुई क�� जब वो सितार के साथ संजीव को शूट कर रहे थे, तो सैट पर किसी समझदार सदस्य ने उनको टोक दिया के वो गलत तरीके से पकड़े हुए सितार के साथ संजीव को शूट कर रहे हैं. गुलज़ार साब को वो बात इतने गहरे पहुंची के उन्होंने सितार सीखना शुरु किया और अगले आठ साल तक सितार बजाना सीखा भी और फिर ‘मीरा’ जैसी फ़िल्म सितार के उस्ताद पं रवि शंकर के साथ भी काम किया|

संगीत और सितार से गुलज़ार का ‘परिचय’, और उसके बाद पूरी तरह ज���या हुआ अनुभव, उनके कृतित्व को सम्पूर्णता की ओर ले जाता हुआ।
