Moldova’s Indigenous Grape Varieties 🍇✨
Step into the soul of Moldovan winemaking through its native grape treasures — Feteasca Albă, Feteasca Regala, Feteasca Neagra, and Rara Neagra — each telling a unique story of heritage, resilience, and flavor.
🌿 Feteasca Alba
An ancient white variety cultivated in Moldova long before the phylloxera outbreak. Feteasca Alba yields delicate, aromatic wines with floral notes of vine blossom, acacia, and wildflowers, balanced by refreshing hints of citrus and green apple. It remains Moldova’s most widely planted indigenous white grape, with nearly 800 hectares under vine.
🌿 Feteasca Regala
A natural cross between Feteasca Albă and Grasa de Cotnari, this variety emerged in the 1920s and quickly gained favor. Semi-aromatic and expressive, its wines are floral and citrusy, with a medium to full body. Moldova now cultivates around 400 hectares of this versatile grape.
🌿 Feteasca Neagra
With roots going back over 2,000 years, Feteasca Neagră likely originated in Moldova’s Prut Valley, a historic winegrowing area in eastern Moldova. It produces elegant red and rosé wines, rich in aromas of blackberry, sour cherry, dried plum, raisin, and subtle spice. Today, it covers approximately 430 hectares.
🌿 Rara Neagra
A variety with ancient Geto-Dacian origins, Rara Neagră is celebrated for its light, graceful wines. Expect fine tannins and bright aromas of rosehip, red currant, and wild blackberry. Around 230 hectares are currently cultivated in Moldova — a testament to its enduring legacy since the time of Stephen the Great, a revered Moldovan ruler from the 15th century.
Experience these native grapes and their stories at the 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine, hosted by Chișinău — a celebration of Moldova’s rich viticultural heritage and future.

MOLDOVA’s recognized terroirs proudly protected by PGI 🌱🍷
The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) system acknowledges the deep connection between wine and terroir – the unique combination of soil, climate, topography, and human tradition. In the Republic of Moldova, the viticultural regions with PGI – Codru, Stefan Voda, Valul lui Traian, and Divin – give wines an authentic identity.
🍇 PGI CODRU – the largest designated wine region of the Republic of Moldova.
Located in the central zone, this territory is characterized by calcareous and leached chernozem soils, along with a mild microclimate that favors the production of fine, aromatic, and well-balanced white wines and elegant sparkling wines.
Among the cultivated varieties are:
White: Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris
Red: Rara Neagra, Feteasca Neagra, Saperavi, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon.
🍷 PGI STEFAN VODA – a wine-producing region with strong traditions in the southeast of the Republic of Moldova.
Located in the southeastern part of the country, the Stefan Voda PGI is renowned for its expressive wines, crafted from grapes grown on gently sloping hillsides with diverse exposures.
Among the cultivated varieties are:
Rară Neagra, Feteasca Neagra, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Saperavi, and Malbec – grape varieties that give rise to intense, balanced wines full of character.
🥂 PGI VALUL LUI TRAIAN - the name of the region derives from the ancient fortification system known as the “Trajan’s Wall” – a historical landmark that crosses the area and symbolizes the enduring tradition and millennia-old heritage of viticulture in southern Moldova.
🍷 The region is renowned for its full-bodied red and rosé wines, characterized by high extract and remarkable aging potential.
Red grape varieties account for approximately 70% of the vineyards and include: Rara Neagra, Feteasca Neagra, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Saperavi, Shiraz, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and others.
White varieties cover around 30% of the area, including: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Feteasca Albă, Feteasca Regală, Viorica, and more.
🥃 PGI DIVIN– the designated region extends across the entire country – from the Carpathian Plateau in the North, through the Codru area in the Center, to the southern steppes. It is produced throughout the country from selected wines and aged at least 3 years in oak barrels, developing complex aromas and an internationally recognized identity.
📍 These topics of origin, authenticity, and economic value will be explored in depth at the 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine, taking place June 16–20, 2025, at the Palace of the Republic, Chișinau.
