🧠🩻 AutoML model distinguishes pituitary macroadenomas from parasellar meningiomas on routine MRI with ~97% accuracy
◆ Thomas Jefferson University team built an automated machine learning (AutoML) tool that classifies these two skull base tumours on standard pre-operative MRI; in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, it’s reported as the first use of this tech for this specific differential.
◆ Trained on 1,628 images from 116 patients and tested on 959 unseen images, the model achieved 97.55% overall accuracy at a 0.5 confidence threshold, with sensitivity/specificity of ~97/99% for pituitary macroadenomas and ~98/96% for parasellar meningiomas, outperforming typical human read ranges (~83–97%).
◆ Clinically, this could refine surgical planning in centres without skull-base subspecialists by reducing misclassification and supporting triage and training—but it remains single-centre, preclinical work that still needs multi-institutional validation, careful workflow integration and safety testing before influencing guidelines.
