Mikisiw Awashish, a fourth-year forward on the McGill Redbirds men’s hockey team and two-time #OUA Champion of EDI Award recipient, has had a strong desire to reconnect with his family’s culture.
To deepen that connection and celebrate his heritage, Awashish organized a two-day trip for the McGill Redbirds to face the UQTR Patriotes at the local rink in his home community of Mashteuiatsh, Quebec, on the shores of Lac Saint-Jean.

Throughout June, the #OUA recognizes National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
This is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and deepen our understanding of Indigenous Peoples and their enduring impact on communities across Canada, while also serving as an important reminder of our collective responsibility to advance meaningful reconciliation through education, awareness, and action.
The OUA remains committed to fostering inclusive and respectful environments where Indigenous student-athletes, coaches, staff, officials, and community members feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
We encourage everyone to engage with Indigenous perspectives, celebrate Indigenous excellence, and continue learning about the rich histories and cultures that have shaped our country.

In May, I had the chance to be part of a little piece of history, hosting the inaugural @OUAsport On The Rise: Women in Sport Summit.
There were tears, laughter, and joy. Grateful to everyone who trusted me with the opportunity and to the athletes and speakers who made it special

Yvonne Barnes, a second-year midfielder with the @algomatbirds women’s soccer team and recipient of the #OUA Champion of EDI Award, always puts others first.
Her greatest impact comes through the compassion she shows to teammates and staff. Whether supporting a struggling player or taking a recruit out for lunch, Barnes embraces her role as both a key player and team ambassador for the Thunderbirds.
