The All Progressives Congress (APC) heartily joins millions of Nigerians, Party faithful, and well-wishers across the globe in celebrating our dynamic Vice President, His Excellency, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, on the joyous occasion of his 60th birthday anniversary.

Attaining the diamond age of 60 is a milestone marked not just by years, but by a lifetime of selfless service, profound intellect, and unyielding commitment to the progress and stability of our dear nation.

As Governor of Borno State during some of the most challenging periods in the state’s history, Senator Shettima demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience, and compassionate governance. His commitment to infrastructure, education, and human capital development laid the groundwork for recovery and rebuilding of the entire North East geopolitical zone. Later, as a distinguished Senator representing Borno Central, his legislative contributions consistently reflected his deep passion for socio-economic development and national unity.

Consequent upon his elevation as Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Shettima continues to exemplify loyalty, strategic economic foresight, and unwavering commitment to the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration. His leadership of the National Economic Council (NEC) and active driving of crucial economic initiatives are steering our nation toward sustainable development, industrial renaissance, and prosperity for all citizens.

Today, I represented His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the Second Edition of the Asiwaju Scorecard Series / Asiwaju Policy Roundtable. I conveyed Mr President’s warm greetings and appreciation for the opportunity to engage Nigerians on the critical task of moving our nation from economic uncertainty to stability, from stability to growth, and from growth to prosperity. I highlighted the progress recorded since the difficult but necessary reforms of the Tinubu administration, including stronger external reserves, increased non-oil revenue, improved trade performance, sustained GDP growth and a significant moderation in inflation. These gains demonstrate that the foundations are being strengthened, even as we recognise that macroeconomic stability is not the destination, but the foundation for cheaper food, more jobs, affordable credit, reliable power and stronger purchasing power.

I also emphasised that President Tinubu’s $1 trillion economy by 2030 is not merely a number; it is a national mission to build a more productive, competitive and prosperous Nigeria. Achieving it requires an integrated economic architecture built around strategic highways, railways, deep-sea ports, energy infrastructure and digital connectivity, linking our production centres to domestic and international markets. Our five-port maritime vision, supported by major road and rail corridors, can position Nigeria as the maritime, logistics and industrial gateway to West and Central Africa, while industrial parks, agro-processing zones, logistics hubs, manufacturing clusters and the AKK gas pipeline can transform infrastructure into production, jobs, exports and investment. Equally important is investing in our young people through education, skills development, digital training and responsible access to credit.

As we approach 2027, the choice before Nigerians is clear: progress or retreat; productivity or stagnation; investment or isolation. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the foundation has been laid and the work has begun. Our task now is to move from reform to results, from results to growth, from growth to prosperity, and from prosperity to a $1 trillion economy

I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive the DTN@100 Politician of the Year Award package, presented to me by the Publisher of Daily Times Nigeria, Mr. Fidelis Anosike, ahead of the historic DTN@100 celebration on September 3rd.

The commemorative package, which includes a 1960 edition of the Daily Times newspaper, an Award Certificate and a commemorative plaque, is far more than a collection of memorabilia. For me, it represents a powerful reminder of a journey in public service, leadership and the privilege of contributing, in whatever capacity, to the progress of our nation.

To be recognised by an institution with the remarkable history and legacy of Daily Times Nigeria is a special privilege. For a century, Daily Times has been an important part of Nigeria's media and national story, documenting our journey as a people and contributing significantly to the development of journalism and public discourse.

I therefore receive this honour with profound gratitude and, more importantly, with humility. Every recognition in public life should not only be celebrated; it should also deepen one's sense of responsibility. This award reinforces my commitment to continue working for a stronger, more united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

I sincerely thank the management and entire family of Daily Times Nigeria for finding me worthy of this recognition. I deeply appreciate the confidence and goodwill that this honour represents.

APC REOPENS MEMBERSHIP ELECTRONIC-REGISTRATION

Ahead of the 2027 General Elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) announces the reopening of the Party’s Membership Electronic-Registration Exercise across the country on Monday, August 31, 2026.

We invite all Party stakeholders, supporters and members, old and new, to participate in the APC Membership Electronic-Registration Exercise. The exercise will be conducted in all wards nationwide. Existing members are expected to validate their membership, while new and intending members are encouraged to register and join the progressive family.

Registrants must be 18 years or older and possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN).

The E-Registration Exercise is designed to digitise the Party’s membership register, ensure the integrity of membership records, enhance efficient access to membership data for planning and management decisions, promote internal democracy, and strengthen the Party’s commitment to democratic innovation in Nigeria.

This is desperation of the most pitiful kind … an admission he is clueless and out of touch with Nigeria’s economic realities and imperatives of reform … willful blindness to transformative progress recorded by the Tinubu-administration … grossly bereft of ideas of alternative economic policy prescription … a last-ditch grasping at straws of misplaced populism that sets up to what may well become the final defeat, in 2027, of the longest presidential ambition in Nigeria’s electoral history.

Restoring petrol subsidies: Atiku’s volte-face and desperation for power

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and perennial candidate for the presidency of Nigeria, has finally revealed his economic plans to Nigerians, should he be elected as President by January next year.

Against expectations that he would announce a more creative and ingenious alternative to the programme being executed by the Tinubu administration, Atiku Abubakar behaved like a man from an archaic past who least comprehends the present economic dynamics and suggested that he would restore the much-abused, wasteful, pillaged, corruption-ridden fuel subsidy regime, which the Petroleum Industry Act made illegal from the end of June, 2023. Even though he used to believe that the subsidy regime must be eliminated, a point he canvassed in the run-up to his defeat in the  2023 election,  he has now opportunistically recanted the major plank of his economic doctrine and turned a renegade.

It is not difficult to explain why Atiku has latched onto the abandoned subsidy regime, five months to the election. Desperate for power, he needed to make a promise that he knew, if he were candid with our people, does not make fiscal sense, is retrogressive, and is against the genuine interest of the people. But before his suggestion hoodwinks the people, we must quickly subject the promise to a serious examination, especially in the context of Nigeria’s present economic and petroleum realities.

We respect Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s constitutional right to propose alternative policies, to seek the support of Nigerians and recant a major policy prescription.  However, Nigerians also deserve to understand what the proposed restoration of subsidy would actually mean, how it would be funded, and whether it is compatible with the legal and structural changes that have taken place in the petroleum sector.

First, we must clear some ambiguities about the so-called subsidy. It is not some money sitting in the treasury to be disbursed to offer cheap fuel to Nigerians. It is the massive discount the NNPC offered the Nigerian government: selling fuel it bought at N100 at N50 at the pump, leading to under-recovery of costs and massive losses. Somewhere in the NNPC books are still trillions of Naira in subsidy costs that the Nigerian government has not paid. Contrary to Atiku's claim in his interview, no N30 trillion subsidy windfall or savings exists anywhere except in his imagination.

The petrol subsidy regime that Nigerians knew before May 2023 was dismantled as part of the country’s petroleum-sector reforms. The Petroleum Industry Act established a new framework for the downstream petroleum market. It removed the subsidy, as was previously done for diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel, ending a system that had placed a substantial and often unpredictable burden on public finances. The PIA scheduled the subsidy removal by the end of June 2023. President Tinubu only accelerated it by weeks to stop further bleeding before the due date.

Restoring the old arrangement therefore cannot simply be presented as a matter of announcing that government will once again pay part of the cost of petrol. It would require a clear legal, fiscal and administrative framework, including identifying the source of the funds and determining how such a policy would be implemented under the present petroleum-market structure.

More importantly, Nigeria’s petroleum landscape has changed significantly since May 2023. For many years, the country relied heavily on imported petrol, with the government bearing the consequences of the gap between the regulated pump price and the cost of supplying the product. Today, the emergence of substantial domestic refining capacity has fundamentally altered that equation. The Dangote Refinery has become a major source of locally refined petrol. Indeed, the Dangote Refinery would not have kickstarted production for local consumption were the subsidy regime operative.  This is an important point that Atiku deceptively ignored.

Atiku's proposal portends a reversal of current local production, and it will spell bankruptcy for smaller local refineries like Aradel's, causing attendant job losses and a loss of foreign exchange. Because the sector is now market-driven, Nigeria now exports refined products to Europe, Asia, and the United States, restoring national pride. This development is a sharp contrast to when Obasanjo and Atiku were in power: Nigeria's largest import, costing about $10 billion, was refined products!. President Tinubu has flipped that to Nigeria's advantage.

The N15 trillion that would have been borrowed and spent on selling discounted petrol has now significantly gone into the coffers of the three tiers of government. Now all states are fiscally stable and can pay salaries regularly and embark on infrastructure projects. In July, the three tiers shared about N3 trillion, a record, from the federation account. That is a major achievement, since the abolition of petrol price discount and distortions in the foreign exchange regime.

Nigeria is increasingly moving from a model in which scarce foreign exchange is used to import refined petrol to one in which crude oil, largely sold in Naira, can be processed domestically and supplied to the Nigerian market. That transition creates opportunities for greater energy security, foreign-exchange conservation, industrial development and ultimately a boost to employment generation.

The subsidy debate must therefore be grounded in the realities of today's market rather than treated as though Nigeria's petroleum sector has remained unchanged.

The former petrol price discount arrangement was not simply government handing out a harmless discount. It involved the public sector absorbing the difference between regulated prices and the actual cost of supplying petrol, with substantial fiscal consequences.

At various points, the government financed or accommodated the burden through borrowing and other public-sector financing arrangements. Millions of barrels of crude oil had previously been pledged against loans used to finance the subsidy regime. At a stage, the NNPC in 2024 was at a breaking point, owing suppliers billions of dollars.

In practical terms, therefore, Nigerians should ask a straightforward question: If the subsidy is restored, who pays for it? What will the new pump price be? N200 or N500? If petrol is sold below its economic cost, which is about N1,200 to N1,300, someone must absorb the difference. Ultimately, that cost falls on the public finances—through reduced funds for infrastructure and social services, reduced allocation to states and 774 local councils, increased borrowing, higher public debt, or some combination of these.

There is no disagreement that the cost of petrol places enormous pressure on Nigerian households and businesses. The hardship created by higher energy and transportation costs is real, and government will continue to pursue policies that reduce the burden on citizens. The Tinubu administration, for instance, has been encouraging the use of Compressed Natural Gas, 70 per cent cheaper than petrol, to power taxis, cars and distribution trucks. Even Dangote and BUA  have CNG trucks in their fleet. What remains is for commercial trucks, buses, and taxis to pass on the benefits of reduced energy costs to our people.

We believe sustainable relief is different from recreating a fiscal arrangement that will again cripple our country.

The better question is how Nigeria can use its emerging domestic refining capacity, improved petroleum-sector regulation, and increased competition to achieve more stable and affordable energy prices without returning to an opaque and fiscally burdensome subsidy regime.

Political promises must be backed by fiscal arithmetic. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is entitled to propose a different economic direction. Specific answers should accompany any promise to restore fuel subsidy. How much will the programme cost annually? What revenue source will finance it? Will the government borrow to fund it? Will the National Assembly be asked to amend existing PIA legislation and petroleum-sector rules? How will subsidy payments be verified and protected from abuse, as witnessed some years ago?

And, now that Nigeria has substantially increased domestic petrol production, what precisely would the proposed subsidy be subsidising—the cost of local production, transportation and distribution, or some other component of the petroleum value chain?

Nigeria cannot afford to return to policies whose costs are hidden from citizens until they appear later as debt, reduced government spending on social services, and further pressure on the national currency.

The country should welcome robust debate about the cost of living and the direction of economic policy. But that debate must be anchored in Nigeria's reality today, not yesterday's petroleum economy.

We urge all political actors, including Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, to present Nigerians with the full fiscal and legal implications of any proposal to restore fuel subsidy.

It was a profound honour to pay a courtesy visit to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, CFR, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Paying homage to such a distinguished custodian of Ibadan’s rich heritage was an opportunity to reflect on the enduring values of leadership, wisdom, culture and service. Our conversation also touched on the development of our communities and the collective responsibility to build a more peaceful, united and prosperous Nigeria.

I have immense respect for the place of our traditional institutions in the Nigerian story. Beyond preserving our history and cultural identity, our traditional rulers continue to serve as bridges between generations and important voices for peace, stability and community development.

I sincerely appreciate His Imperial Majesty for the warmth with which I was received and for the wisdom and insights shared during the visit. It was a memorable engagement, and I left deeply enriched by the experience.

It was indeed a thing of joy and admiration to see millions of our supporters across Osun State who trooped out earlier today to welcome me and members of the National Working Committee, as well as the Senate President, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Deputy Senate President, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and most of the governors of our great party at the grand and mega rally in support of our candidate for the governorship election of the state coming up this Saturday.

The atmosphere was electric, colourful and deeply inspiring. From Osogbo to every corner of the state, the message was unmistakable: the people of Osun are ready for a new chapter of progress, prosperity and purposeful governance. Their massive turnout was not merely a show of political strength; it was a powerful expression of confidence in the APC and the future we are committed to building together.

I emphasised the strategic importance of Osun returning to the centre. With an APC government in the state working in partnership with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Osun can attract greater federal attention, unlock more development opportunities and position itself to benefit fully from the Renewed Hope agenda. Politics must ultimately be about improving the lives of our people.

Today’s rally has reaffirmed my conviction that the people of Osun are hopeful, determined and ready for change. They believe, as we do, that the future of Osun is brighter with the APC in government. This Saturday, let us translate this massive enthusiasm into votes and make history together. Osun is ready.
