Olam Farms Seeks NYSC Partnership To Boost Aquaculture Development

The General Manager, Olam Nigeria Limited, Mrs Morenike Alayerogun, has sought the support of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to strengthen aquaculture development and promote youth empowerment in the country.

Alayerogun made the request when she led a delegation of the company on a courtesy visit to the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.

She disclosed that about 200 Corps Members were currently serving with the organisation in various fields, adding that Olam was committed to supporting the Federal Government's efforts in nation-building, youth development, and Corps Members' mentorship.

The General Manager stated that, as part of its expansion drive, Olam had completed what she described as the biggest research and development institute for aquaculture in Ilorin, Kwara State, and was currently constructing another factory in Asaba, Delta State.

She further disclosed that the company had established extensive partnerships with universities across the country to strengthen aquaculture development.

According to her, the company planned to bring specialists from universities to Ilorin for a one-year training programme, after which they would be attached to farmers across the country.

She said providing farmers with adequate theoretical and practical knowledge would enhance the productivity and sustainability of their aquaculture businesses.

Alayerogun therefore requested the deployment of more Corps Members to strengthen Olam's farm operations, particularly in Kwara State.

She added that Olam was ready to support the Federal Government's agenda of growing the economy to a one-trillion-dollar economy.

"We will accommodate and feed them, and after one year, we will attach them to our farmers all over the nation," she said.

She further proposed a partnership with NYSC to train more Corps Members who could subsequently be supported by the Bank of Industry (BoI) to establish their own businesses.

In his remarks, the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, said unemployment was a global challenge affecting young people.

He noted that agribusiness remained a major component of the Nigerian economy, adding that this further underscored the relevance of Olam's agricultural activities.

Nafiu commended Olam for its contributions to the Nigerian economy, particularly its efforts to empower Corps Members.

He said NYSC Management frowned at the misuse and underutilisation of Corps Members and urged Corps Employers to continue to add value to the Corps Members deployed to their organisations.

"We want to thank you for the value addition to our Corps Members," the Director General stated.

Nafiu disclosed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be required to define the responsibilities of both parties, stressing that the Scheme considered the security and welfare of Corps Members a top priority.

NYSC DG Charges Corps Members To Embrace Agricbusiness

…As Six Receive N10m Grants Under Farmers for the Future Programme

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has charged Corps Members to maximise the opportunities provided by the service year by venturing into commodity marketing and other viable businesses.

General Nafiu stated that agribusiness remains a viable avenue for young people seeking to build sustainable businesses and create wealth.

He stated this in Abuja during the presentation of cheques to six Corps Members who emerged winners of the competitive Farmers for the Future Programme, organised by the British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATNF) in collaboration with the NYSC.

The beneficiaries are; Dominic Olufemi, (FC/25C/1143), N3,000,000, Temitope Adewole, (ED/26A/2251), N2,000,000, Abdulwaheed Bala, (ED/25B/1402), N2,000,000, Olanike Mayungbe, (OG/26B/1037), N1,000,000, Kingsley Udoeyen, (KG/26A/1735), N1,000,000 and Lorember Lorsue, (JG/25B/1742), N1,000,000.

The NYSC Director-General commended the management of BATNF for placing Nigerian youths at the centre of its entrepreneurship initiatives through value-chain development, employment creation, and its partnership with the NYSC.

While congratulating the beneficiaries, General Nafiu stressed the importance of value addition to the success and sustainability of every business venture.

“I charge you to spread the news around. We have seen the outcome, and it is a good idea,” the Director-General said.

In her remarks, the Acting Director, Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), Mrs Winifred Shopeka, said the programme commenced with the opening of an online registration portal for Corps Members engaged in agribusiness to submit their business plans, particularly those with existing businesses.

She disclosed that nearly 3,000 Corps Members applied for the programme and underwent a rigorous selection process, which produced 20 finalists.

According to her, the 20 finalists proceeded to a boot camp, after which they participated in a final pitching session that produced the 10 best presenters, from whom the six ultimate winners were selected.

Shopeka added that the six beneficiaries had been mentored and attached to established market operators who would assist in marketing their products.

She further disclosed that Corps Members who did not make it to the final stage of the competition were also trained by BATNF.

The Team Lead, BATNF, Mr Oludare Odusanya, congratulated the beneficiaries and urged Corps Members engaged in agribusiness to master the fundamentals and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills required to succeed in their ventures.

“We are happy with our collaboration with the NYSC, and it will continue,” he said.

Odusanya explained that BATNF is an independent organisation established to contribute to poverty reduction in Nigeria, particularly through sustainable agricultural practices and other interventions.

He said the Farmers for the Future Programme was instituted by BATNF in collaboration with NYSC to encourage Corps Members to venture into agribusiness and become job creators.

He added that the beneficiaries would be attached to mentors who would guide them towards achieving success in their respective businesses.

According to him, the programme has, since its inception, continued to enhance the entrepreneurial capacity of Corps Members.

2026 Batch 'C' Stream One Orientation Course Commences September 30

This is to inform the general public and especially the Prospective Corps Members that the 2026 Batch 'C' Stream One Orientation Course will commence on Wednesday 30th September, and end on Tuesday 20th October, 2026.

Registration of all Corps Members will start on Wednesday 30th September, and end on Friday 2nd October, 2026.

The Swearing-in Ceremony is to hold on Friday, 2nd October 2026.

The three week exercise is scheduled to take place in all the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Director General of NYSC, Brigadier Olakunle Nafiu, wishes all the Prospective Corps Members and Course Officials safe trips to their respective Orientation Camps.

He also enjoins the Prospective Corps Members to avoid night travel and board vehicles at designated motor parks.

Youth Minister Launches NYSC E-Training Portal

The Minister for Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, has said the Ministry would continue to support the National Youth Service Corps.

He stated this while inaugurating the NYSC Staff, E-Training Portal during the 2026 Batch 'C' Pre-Orientation Workshop held in Abuja.

Olawande commended the leadership of NYSC for bringing up new innovations that would improve efficiency at work.

He expressed satisfaction with the technology driven status of NYSC in recent times, adding that the professionalism and more access to knowledge by every staff of NYSC was laudable.

"This platform would also help to build more efficient, knowledgeable and responsive workforce. We are committed towards making the Scheme get better, let us work together and embrace technology", Olawande said.

He also said that with the growing trend across the globe, academic qualifications alone cannot solve the problems of unemployment.

"Our Corps Members must learn practical skills in leadership, entrepreneurship, critical thinking, problems-solving."

"They must also understand the importance of discipline, integrity, and personal responsibility. Every Corps Member must be encouraged to make meaningful impact", Olawande stated.

He also reiterated that the service year should be an opportunity for graduates to serve, lead, and contribute to national development

The Minister disclosed that Skills Acuisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) remains the most important content in the NYSC as at date.

Also speaking, the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu said societal changes has made it imperative for the Scheme to constantly review its Orientation Course contents for more relevance.

He added that the Workshop theme; "Reimagining the NYSC Orientation Course: Building Resilient, Responsible and Service-Oriented Corps Members for a Changing World", was chosen to shape the the Corps Members' character, mindset, skills and civic awareness.

He added that the success of the Orientation Course depends largely on the effective collaboration of all stakeholders.

In his words; "I encourage everyone to keep building the partnership and trust needed for the security and welfare of Corps Members wherever they are posted across the country".

"Management remains committed to working with security agencies to access risk, take preemptive steps and make Corps Members safe throughout service year".

The Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr Nura Umar, in his address, appreciated Comrade Olawande for his passion for youth development.

He stated further that the Orientation Camp is the first contact of every Corps Member to kick-start the service year, adding that there was the need to shape their character, values and understanding of National responsibility.

Mr Umar also said it is necessary to "rebuild and modernise the contents, methodology and delivery of the Orientation Exercise to ensure that it remains focused and align with contemporary realities."

He urged the participants to use the workshop to devise strategies that would deepen the stakeholders' relationship through the welfare and safety of Corps Members, camp administration, strengthening discipline and leadership development, enhancing Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development.

Education Minister Commends NYSC On Digital Innovations To Curb Fraud

The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has commended the National Youth Service Corps for deploying technology and digital innovations to curb fraudulent activities and enhance the efficiency of its operations.

The Minister gave the commendation when the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

Dr. Alausa applauded the NYSC leadership for the transformation recorded by the Scheme, particularly its adoption of technology in the registration and deployment of Corps Members.

“I would like to commend you for all the transformation that you have brought to NYSC and the use of technology to ensure seamless operations and deployment of Corps Members,” he said.

The Minister recalled that NYSC’s decision to embrace technology in the registration process initially met with resistance from some sections of the public, but noted that the digitization of the process had significantly improved its efficiency and was now being widely applauded by well-meaning Nigerians.

The NYSC Director General informed the Minister that the Scheme had further strengthened the security features of Corps Members’ Call-up and Posting Letters following the activities of unscrupulous individuals who had devised means of cloning the documents and issuing fake letters to prospective employers, while extorting money from unsuspecting Corps Members.

General Nafiu explained that the enhanced security measures had made the NYSC’s Call-up and Posting Letters more resistant to manipulation, adding that employers could easily verify the authenticity of the documents.

He further disclosed that a joint committee comprising relevant officials of NYSC and the Federal Ministry of Education had been constituted to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions and ensure that only qualified and eligible Nigerian graduates participate in the National Youth Service Corps.

NYSC Applauds Security Agencies For Safe Rescue Of Abducted Corps Members

The Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) expresses profound appreciation to the security agencies and groups involved in the successful rescue of the sixteen Corps Members abducted in Kogi State on 26 August 2026, while they were travelling from the Bayelsa State camp on relocation to Abuja after a successful Orientation Course.

The NYSC particularly commends the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Kogi State Vigilante groups, and others who contributed to the search and rescue efforts.

The professionalism, courage, commitment, and coordination demonstrated in rescuing the Corps Members are deeply appreciated.The Scheme acknowledges the unwavering support and commitment of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the safety and welfare of Corps Members nationwide.

The security agencies were indeed animated by His Excellency’s concern and commitment to urgently and successfully rescuing the Corps Members. The crucial role played by the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Honourable Minister of Youth Development in the recovery efforts is also greatly valued. NYSC appreciates the families of the affected Corps Members for their patience and cooperation during this period and the media for the professional manner in which they handled the entire episode without compromising the safety of the Corps Members while in captivity.

Management is relieved that all affected Corps Members have been safely recovered and are in high spirits, eager to resume at their places of primary assignment. Their resolute spirit is humbling and instructive, and NYSC remains committed to supporting them as they recover from this traumatic experience.

The Scheme remains committed to the safety and welfare of all Corps Members and will continue working with government and security agencies to strengthen protective measures.

Lessons have been learned, and protocols will be reviewed to forestall future occurrences. Salute to courage, duty, and patriotism.
