National Black Literacy Day was created by Semicolon, a black woman-owned bookseller in Chicago, in 2021. This day aims to encourage a life-long love of reading and support readers in low-literacy communities.

Black Love Day was originally created by Handy-Kendi after watched Malcolm X get shot down by other black people in the movie Malcolm X. Handy-Kendi said “I heard the creator say to me that we need more black love.”
