If they want to do charity work, fine. Let the organisations and the causes take centre stage. But this constant need to package everything as a royal-style engagement reeks of a couple desperate to cling to the relevance and prestige they walked away from.

Perhaps instead of chasing headlines and trading on royal proximity, they should concentrate on building sustainable careers, paying their own bills and proving they can stand on their own two feet without borrowing the Crown’s credibility.

You cannot quit the institution and still expect the public to treat you as though you represent it. Pick a lane.
