Today, May 28, marks the National Day of Mourning, a citizen-led initiative to remember the thousands of lives lost to violence across Nigeria, to honour those still missing, and to demand justice and accountability for victims and survivors.

This day is not only about the statistics; , is about the fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, and daughters whose absence continues to leave deep scars in the hearts of their families and communities. It is a day to stand in solemn solidarity with those who have lost loved ones, and with families who await the return of their abducted relatives.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with the unrelenting wave of insecurity, this day is a reminder of the government’s constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and welfare of all citizens.

We invite you to join us for a virtual commemoration of this sobering, yet vital day of remembrance and collective call for accountability.

The 2025 commemoration of the National Day of Mourning is here.

In 2024 alone, no fewer than 5,353 Nigerians were killed with 5,171 others abducted. A staggering 88.5% of these killings occurred in the Northern region.

Nigeria is not at war, yet our people are being massacred daily.

These victims are more than statistics, they were sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, friends and neighbors. Their lives mattered. Their stories deserve to be told.

That is why every 28th of May, Nigerians come together to observe the National Day of Mourning, to grieve, to remember, to demand accountability and justice.

Join us. Stand for the dead. Speak for the living.
