The Cybersecurity Bill is the first step to #DigitalSovereignty.

And with it, a way to address the fundamental flaw in our approach to security and online harms: a lack of competition that puts power in our hands to shape our future.

This can't go on 🚨

Musk and his AI indecency engine shows we must shift power away from Big Tech.

Unless we regulate AI, break monopolies with competition and push for #DigitalSovereignty, the UK could be forever locked in a techno-permacrisis.

[Open Rights Group @OpenRightsGroup]

To break the techno-permacrisis, we need:

⚫ Interoperability, where people can move social media platforms while carrying their followers with them.

⚫ Digital Sovereignty, where our digital infrastructure is run on homegrown open source software – 'Public Money, Public Code'.

Our pressure on the government to back down on Digital IDs worked.

But as long as it remains a government project, our data and privacy is at risk. The fight isn’t over.

The climbdown over mandatory Digital ID is a victory for ORG and other groups that warned of the threats to everyone's civil liberties.

BUT questions still remain.

Despite this U-turn, neither the scheme nor the giant pricetag have gone away entirely.

Even if it's voluntary, Digital ID still creates a surveillance infrastructure.

This could be expanded later on as a requirement to access public services.

As we've seen with eVisas, digitalising interactions with the State without physical backups creates serious problems.

We need more transparency about when and how AI is used in the asylum process.

We need to know what safeguards are in place to prevent errors and who's accountable when AI gets it wrong.

Without these vulnerable people will be harmed and these tools will be rolled out further.

[Open Rights Group @OpenRightsGroup]

The digital hostile environment spreads with AI in the asylum process.

AI isn't neutral. It can be easily tweaked to produce preferred results.

Alongside the Home Office's ever-increasing hostile narratives, we ask how can migrants trust such automation? https://t.co/kWQxjeHHmH

[Open Rights Group @OpenRightsGroup]

The use of AI tools to clear the asylum backlog prioritises speed over accuracy.

The Home Office’s own evaluation reveals that 9% of AI-generated summaries were so flawed they had to be removed from the pilot.

And 23% of caseworkers lacked full confidence in the tools’ outputs.

Did you know you can find Open Rights Group in many places? Just saying.

Hidden in the Online Safety Act is the spy clause that threatens encryption on messaging apps.

As ORG's James Baker says, Ofcom "may be waiting to see what happens in Europe with the Chat Control proposal, because it’s quite hard for the UK to go alone.”

Our systems aren't secure if foreign powers can pull the plug.

The UK is dangerously reliant on a few foreign tech companies for critical digital infrastructure.

We need open-source systems we can control.

“Just as relying on one country for the UK’s energy needs would be risky and irresponsible, so is overreliance on US companies to supply the bulk of our digital infrastructure."

We need Digital Sovereignty so the rug can't be pulled out from under us.
