"The first-of-its-kind study was developed to explore why people who live in rural areas suffer disproportionately from higher rates of heart and lung diseases, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Led by Dr. Stephanie Broyles, professor and director of the Contextual Risk Factors Laboratory at Pennington Biomedical, the longitudinal study first collected data in Louisiana’s Assumption Parish before expanding to Franklin Parish a few months later." Pennington Biomedical's Dr. Amanda Staiano and Dr. Melissa Holland from Our Lady of the Lake were recently on @Talk1073 to discuss recruitment for the COACH trial, which will test different ways to help children and their families improve their health through lifestyle changes delivered by primary care clinics in communities in Louisiana and Tennessee.
The COACH trial is enrolling 900 children ages 5 to 17 with obesity, which is classified as a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for their age and sex. Patients and their parents are being recruited through urban, suburban and rural doctor’s offices in Tennessee and Louisiana.
Dr. Staiano and Dr. Holland highlighted that as we head into summer, it is a critical time for childhood weight gain. Many children lose the structure provided by school meals, sports and regular schedules. As a result, unhealthy habits can become easier to develop. Can healthy lifestyle changes today help protect your health decades down the road?
New research shows that adults with prediabetes who participated in an intensive lifestyle intervention had a 21% lower risk of developing multiple chronic conditions over more than 20 years compared to those in the placebo group. The findings add to growing evidence that healthy eating, regular physical activity, and sustainable weight management can have lasting benefits for healthy aging.
