The 20-year plan for a fast-growing Sydney that some won't like. Under the state government blueprint, the city's East will be the focus of a major increase in density to house an extra 1.3 million people.
Professional planners are already leading evidence-based parking reform.
But these conversations are complex. Governments are balancing housing growth, congestion, parking availability, transport access and neighbourhood change all at once
That is why planning expertise matters
Parking reform is part of the solution to Australia’s housing crisis. Good planning is the key.
The conversation sparked by the Grattan Institute report reinforces something planners have long understood: housing, transport and infrastructure planning must work together.
This is not a new conversation for the planning profession.
In both our 2023 Planning for the Housing We Need report and our 2025 Planning for Productivity report, PIA called for reduced or flexible minimum car parking requirements where active and public transport is available.
Great to see the shortlist for the 2026 Australian Urban Design Awards announced.
These projects highlight the power of thoughtful planning, design and collaboration in shaping great places and thriving communities across Australia.
Congratulations to all those shortlisted. 👏

We all want more homes to tackle the housing crisis. That means resourcing strategic planning to simplify approvals, planning for infrastructure + jobs, & planning systems that work better - not simply deregulating. Planners are part of the solution, not the problem @AlanKohler.

Investing in infrastructure is essential to enabling more homes.
Planning is what turns that investment into productive, coordinated outcomes: connecting housing with transport, jobs and services.
Great to see so much interest in this fund!

Minister O’Neil is right to call out the housing crisis as a defining challenge of our time.
Australia needs more homes. But those homes must be part of well-located communities, with infrastructure, services & quality of life.
