Legal metrology inspectors from Papua New Guinea and Tonga successfully completed a two-week attachment training programme held from 11–22 May 2026 in Auckland under the Pacific Islands Forum Pacific Quality Infrastructure (PQI) Initiative.
Delivered through Trading Standards New Zealand (TSNZ), the programme focused on the verification of weighing scales and fuel meters, which is essential for fair trade, consumer protection, and accurate everyday transactions.
The training also highlighted the growing contribution of women to metrology and quality infrastructure across the Pacific. Both participating inspectors were women, representing Papua New Guinea and Tonga.
The PQI Initiative was established to strengthen the quality of products and services made in the Pacific, consumed locally, and exported to international markets by improving access to quality infrastructure services.
It applies a strategic, demand-driven, and participatory approach to address Forum Members’ priority quality infrastructure needs. The initiative is guided by international best practices, including the requirements of the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement.
The PQI Initiative is a key intervention area under the Pacific Aid-for-Trade Strategy 2026–2030 (PAfTS) and supports implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

The meeting was chaired by the Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Fiji, His Excellency Joseph Ma’ahanua.
“In this environment, regional cooperation becomes not only desirable but essential. The collective strength of the Blue Pacific lies in our ability to work together, coordinate our responses, and advance common interests in a rapidly changing world. This requires us to remain forward-looking, strategic, and united in our approach to both regional and international trade issues,” said H.E Ma’ahanua.

The Pacific Islands Forum is pleased to announce that the Pacific Aid for Trade Strategy 2026–2030 (PAfTS) is now available online: https://t.co/2nVifb6WHG
The PAfTS provides a regional framework to support Forum Member countries in building the capacity needed to benefit from global trade opportunities. It helps articulate what regionalism means in the context of trade development and guides the Secretariat’s technical assistance to Members.
Endorsed by Forum Trade Ministers in 2025, the Strategy builds on the previous PAfTS to ensure that key regional trade priorities are addressed, that regional initiatives are Forum Member-driven, and that donor and implementation partners coordinate effectively and avoid duplication.
The PAfTS 2026–2030 focuses on key intervention areas, including quality infrastructure, electronic commerce, trade facilitation, services, trade policies and trade agreements, comprehensive connectivity, and priority value chains such as kava and apiculture, with trade and environment integrated across these areas.

Following a week of in‑country consultations and a national stakeholder workshop in Tarawa in early May, meaningful steps have been taken toward Kiribati's potential accession to the EU–Pacific iEPA.
The workshop brought together government agencies, regional partners and technical experts to review findings, discuss opportunities, and help shape Kiribati’s next steps on trade, development and market access.
This progress is made possible through @EUPasifika support via the #SPIRITProject, implemented by @ForumSEC, strengthening Pacific countries’ capacity to engage in trade and regional integration.

The Private Sector team at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) undertook in-country consultations in the Cook Islands on the development of the Pacific Regional Private Sector Strategy Implementation Plan (IP), a deliverable of the Pacific Roadmap for Economic Development under the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
The consultations brought together national stakeholders including government agencies, private sector and industry bodies, civil society, and development partners to identify gaps and opportunities that would inform the Implementation Plan, ensuring it is grounded in national realities while strengthening ownership and alignment.
The team also visited businesses alongside the Cook Islands Chamber of Commerce and Business Link Pacific, gathering practical, on-the-ground insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the private sector.
Insights from in-country consultations will be combined with broader regional engagements to shape Regional Collective Actions that advance private sector development and strengthen support for micro, small, and medium enterprises across the region. The Implementation Plan will then be submitted for consideration and endorsement at the 2026 Forum Economic Ministers Meeting.
