Reimagining Financial Architecture to Achieve Food Sovereignty
African governments have long maintained self-sufficiency as a policy target to achieve food security. In recent times, the justification for this policy choice has been amplified by global shocks such as the Covid-19 pandemic, which resulted in many countries prioritising local needs, for instance, instituting restrictions or even banning food exports, as a way of ensuring domestic food security.

In Africa’s vast landscapes, where millions of smallholder farmers cultivate the continent’s food security, the question of financing looms large. Traditional agricultural finance has long struggled to meet the needs of farmers and agri-SMEs, leaving gaps that threaten productivity, resilience, and sustainability. Today, a new approach — blended finance — is emerging as a potential game-changer.

"FINAS is held annually, and preparations are already underway. This year’s theme (2026) is ‘Towards Sustainable Financial Architecture for Africa’s Food Systems.’ In practice, it asks how we can structure agri‑financing, through both private and public sector actors, alongside key stakeholders to ensure that Africa’s food ecosystem is resilient and sustainable."

Kenya’s agriculture sector faces mounting pressures from climate change, inequality, and rising demand.
The Sustainable Agricultural Systems and Policies (AgSys) Project, implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, is driving systemic transformation through innovative financing, inclusive policy frameworks, and collaborative partnerships.
Key interventions include blended finance models, crop insurance pilots, and the proposed Agriculture Development Fund to boost access to credit and resilience.
By aligning national reforms with global agendas and empowering women and youth, AgSys is helping shift Kenya’s agrifood systems from vulnerability to sustainability— building resilience, unlocking investment, and strengthening food security.

In this edition, we spotlight the urgent theme of financing agri‑food systems. With Africa’s agriculture facing a $65 billion annual financing gap despite contributing up to 32% of GDP and 65% of jobs, the challenge is clear: smallholder farmers remain underserved by formal credit.
Against global supply chain shocks and rising food prices, this issue calls for reimagining financial architecture and scaling innovative solutions to de‑risk agriculture.
The message is simple, Africa must keep the innovation momentum to achieve sustainable food systems financing.
In our cover story, Wairimu Munyinyi-Wahome, Country Director of Heifer International Kenya, shares how the organisation is shifting from simply boosting farm yields to building resilient market systems. Through the Practice for Change programme, Heifer International aims to support 625,000 households by 2030, focusing on dairy, poultry, red meat, and horticulture value chains. The approach emphasizes connecting farmers to finance, markets, and services, making them more “bankable” and closing the living income gap.
Dr. Sophia Baumert, and Kennedy Okech, the projects leads for the Sustainable Agricultural Systems and Policies (AgSys) Project, implemented by GIZ Kenya in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, also share how the project is driving systemic transformation through innovative financing, inclusive policy frameworks, and collaborative partnerships.

Advancing women’s participation in technical roles is critical for building an inclusive and resilient #renewableenergy sector.
GIZ Kenya is pleased to support a Women in Solar Energy Technical Training Opportunity at The Rift Valley National Polytechnic, implemented in partnership with the WTS Foundation and partially funded by the German and Norwegian governments.
The renewable energy sector is expanding rapidly, yet women remain significantly underrepresented in technical roles such as solar installation, maintenance, and system design. Targeted training opportunities for women help close this gap by strengthening technical competencies, building confidence, and creating pathways into quality green jobs.
This 3-week intensive training (13th April – 1st May 2026) will equip participants with industry-relevant solar skills, exposure to internships, and linkages to employment opportunities within the renewable energy sector.
If you are a woman aged 18 - 35 with a background in electrical, mechanical engineering, or renewable energy, we encourage you to apply.
📍 Venue: Rift Valley National Polytechnic
📅 Training period: 13 April – 1 May 2026
⏰ Application deadline: Friday, 10 April 2026
