Crossing Boundaries: The Celtic Festival of Samhain
Join us to explore Samhain (or Halloween), the festival that marks the beginning of the Celtic year: a time when boundaries are crossed, disguises are worn and games are played to take our minds off what might be lurking outside.
Writer and folklorist Róise Ní Bhaoill will delve into one of the four key festivals of the Celtic calendar, exploring the customs and traditions around Samhain and showing how it became closely associated with witches and ‘Trick or Treating’.
Monday, 28th October, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
£5.00 – £6.50

The Linen Hall, in partnership with the Centre Culturel Irlandais and Quotidian, commissioned 10 poets to write a new poem in response to the Robert McAdam Comparative Lexicon and commissioned 10 translations of those poems to create an international curation that spans English, French, Irish and Breton.
Join poets Celia de Fréine, Gail McConnell, Scott McKendry, James Conor Patterson and others as they discuss McAdam’s Lexicon, its legacy and the poetry that it has inspired. Chaired by Maria McManus. This event is part of the Belfast International Arts Festival 2024.
The McAdam Lexicon Poetry Jukebox will be at The Linen Hall from 22 October 2024 to 31 January 2025.
The Robert McAdam Comparative Lexicon (c.1885) is a unique handwritten lexicon of the Irish Language and is one of treasures of The Linen Hall. The Lexicon compares 13,000 Irish headwords with 28 other languages, from Breton to Sanskrit.
