Would creating a CAT 6 really cause people to take CAT 5 storms less seriously? People sometimes underestimate the strength of “less strong” hurricanes: but you can have a CAT 2 (Ike) Hurricane with a 15 foot storm surge.

(A year or so back, I believe it was Dr. Knabb who said that if you have a storm that was a CAT 5 out at sea but is only a CAT 3 when it makes landfall, it may still have some characteristics that people associate with a 5, but unfortunately, people get a false sense of security based on a number that really only describes wind speed.)

They also discussed that while El Niño years do tend to reduce the number of Atlantic hurricanes, it doesn’t mean you can’t still have some very big ones…
