The densest concentrations African American residents form the Deep South’s Black Belt—parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana—reflecting the legacy of plantation slavery and sharecropping. Large urban pockets in cities like Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., trace back to the Great Migration (1910–1970), when millions moved north for industrial jobs. Overall, about 13.6% of the U.S. population identified as Black in 2020.
These patterns matter: they influence voting maps, economic opportunity, health outcomes, and cultural life. Understanding the map means seeing how centuries of policy, economics, and migration shaped where black people live today in the United States.
