Lt Gen “Tindi” Sharma and Brig Mark Pillai – reunion of two Bombay Sapper family’s
In 1942, then Lt MM Pillai was awarded a Military Cross for his daring escape from a POW camp in Singapore and his 5000 km journey home to India across Japanese occupied Malaya, Thailand and Burma. Later he was tasked with training Sappers, and his adjutant was the young “Tindi” Sharma who later retired as Engineer-in-Chief Indian Army, Lt Gen SN Sharma.
A few days ago in Delhi, it was my privilege to reunite the 2 families – in this picture, we stand before a portrait of Lt Gen Sharma’s elder brother Major Somnath Sharma, the first winner of the Param Vir Chakra. From left to right are Col Ravi Pillai 63 Cavalry (Brig Pillai’s 3rd son), Gen Sharma and me.
Lt Mark Pillai’s escape features in my book The Forgotten Indian Prisoners of World War II that can be found here https://t.co/gcrYJ1JcRU

1/ 'Kolberg’ is a testament to Goebbels’ very modern conception of total war, according to which cognitive warfare was at least of equal importance to battles fought with traditional weapons. - The film's story is told supremely well by @Kevin_Prenger's 'Hitler's Last Chance'

Last month I joined Michael Portillo on GB News to discuss The Ascent of Maritime Trade, the final volume of my trilogy on how maritime trade shaped the world.
We covered the fundamental divide between maritime and continental societies - one open, cosmopolitan, tolerant and wealth-creating, the other tending toward autocracy, uniformity and state control. That divide, I argue, explains more of the world than conventional histories acknowledge.
I also pushed back on the standard account of the Enlightenment. France gets the headlines, but the enduring, consequential ideas came from the British Enlightenment’s engineers, inventors, scientists, philosophers, legal reformers, artists and novelists. They were also anti-Slavery proponents. Their work changed the world. France produced a handful of writers whose ideas ended in revolutionary chaos.
Portillo raised the 1854 Northcote-Trevelyan civil service reforms and their role in Britain's long decline. Those reforms were modelled on China's imperial examinations, rewarding classical knowledge, conformity and caution. China's mandarins had over-regulated state monopolies and showed no interest in maritime trade or technology. China declined as a result. Britain, adopting a similar system, gradually followed the same path. Germany, America and Japan trained their officials in science, commerce and technology. The results speak for themselves.
The Ascent of Maritime Trade is out now. It can be read as a stand alone volume, although the full trilogy will give the full historical and philosophical perspective.

I weep when I think of the girls in Afghanistan now being denied the education they deserve. At least Victorian British men were supportive of their womenfolk's endeavours to ensure girls were educated & could fulfil their potential. #women'shistory
