@fakenadine The algorithm doesn’t care about your DOB. It monitors your behaviour, tracks your gaze, listens to the beat of your scrolling. Age is a mindset.
@fakenadine You live in an echo chamber built by algorithms. You, a 40 year old, like stuff, use the internet, buy things. The algorithm sees, knows, predicts. It connects you with others with similar patterns. Shocking. They, like you, like me, are old.
@Wohn_Jick_@PAHoyeck My initial question was, “do you ever read books for adults,” not “do you ever read good books,” because, as you point out, books can be written with audiences in mind, and the books in that stack, IMO, were written for the kind of man who likely has action figures on his shelves
@Wohn_Jick_@PAHoyeck Children’s literature can also be literary. Narnia, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland—all good books, some maybe included in Bloom’s canon even, but they’re still books for children, just like most sci-fi is written for grown-ups with action figures on their shelves.
@soonrightaway The Frank Miller cover probably doesn’t crack the top 5 GR covers for me but I suppose it’s not horrible. I didn’t know Pynchon insisted on having him do the cover. Fun fact, thanks.
@pensandpoison The realities of political existence are aspects of human nature and are as timeless as any other subject. Do you really believe that Shakespeare, or Dante, or the Greeks whom you love so much, were apolitical?
@Wohn_Jick_@PAHoyeck Again, I’m not saying you can’t enjoy these books, although I’d love to argue with Jameson and Bolaño regarding PKD, but to say they are Great Books, putting them on the same level as the best of all time? As if Bloom thought Dune was on par with Shakespeare. Let’s be serious.
@Dea_rMen No, there’s not a single book in this picture. I don’t need a gaming computer. I’d prefer a larger kitchen with more surface space to make actual food and a full sized fridge. A bedroom separate from my living room. More plants. More natural light. Better art on the walls.
@Wohn_Jick_@PAHoyeck I’ve read most of the books in that picture. I’ve even enjoyed a few. But labeling them Great Books… that’s ragebait.
If having a higher bar for literature makes me pretentious and pathetic, so be it. I think we could use more pretension at this incredibly stupid time.
@Wohn_Jick_@PAHoyeck Pal, most of my favorite authors are women you’ve never heard of because you’re busy reading children’s books written by men, for men, who think vaginas look like the giant earthworms in Dune. Try again. Or, better yet, go play with the action figures on your big boy bookshelf.
