I will say, the trick that gets played more is the markup (if at all) that comes through on accessorials and other carrier related surcharges.

I've seen "cheap" shipping rates turn into very expensive shipping invoices by not calculating the percent of orders that have these surcharges and the corresponding fees.

Most ecommerce focused 3PLs price to a ~25–35% gross margin. With no storage fees, that has to come from pick/pack + postage (assuming no fixed technology and support fees, also assuming no value added services or returns)

So a “reasonable” postage markup is whatever, with pick/pack, still lands them in that band.

In practice, this usually comes out to 10–15%, sometimes more if pick/pack is thin.
