Many novelists are in trouble. Publishers are paying lower advances or none at all. Self-publishing sales are difficult to come by, thanks to a market swamped by AI, rendering 'real' books damn near invisible. And expensive ads do little to help. So, why bother to keep writing?

Sadly true. Even a good cover and great blurb isn't enough these days. Ploughing huge amounts into ads seems the only one. Free Amazon self-publishing, once touted as a social leveller, is now reliant for success on people being able to afford massive ad spend.
