It’s one thing to watch press freedom unravel from afar, but quite another to see it from inside the US. I’ve seen these tactics from despots but never thought I’d watch it here: Justice Dept Investigating TV Networks Over Trump Pool Coverage https://t.co/yZmJvCu0J4 via @NYTimes
Great to see Media Watch warn of the risks Trump's Media Ban poses to Australia. Restrictions on press freedom fundamentally threaten democratic values.
In lieu of constitutional protections such as the US First Amendment, Australia needs a Media Freedom Bill.
I spoke to News24 about the White House media ban.
This is not just a US problem. Erosion of media freedom in one democracy can set a precedent.
Australia isn't immune. Journalists are already barred from One Nation events. Without safeguards, we risk undermining the press.
Trump's ban on key journalists covering the White House sets a dangerous precedent. Unlike the US, Australia has no constitutional protection for press freedom, leaving our journalists vulnerable.

The AI industry needs regulation to protect journalism and Australian press freedoms. The rise of AI must be managed in a way that does not compromise the access of Australians to reliable, accountable, fact-based reporting. Read our parliamentary submission below:
I've been frustrated by talk of "balance" in journalism.
"Balance" implies equivalence between positions, which means that to be unbiased a journalist must give equal weight to rival sides. But what happens when an issue is unbalanced? My thoughts:

Times Journalists Subpoenaed as Trump Escalates Pressure on Media https://t.co/GSRUCPFNgW via @NYTimes
An outrageous attack on press freedom. But the NYT has US 1st Amendment rights. Australia has no formal press freedom protection so it would be worse here. @4JournoFreedom
The imprisonment of journalists in Bangladesh threatens press freedom & the public's right to know. A free press helps support a healthy democracy, & you you can’t have the latter without the former. The AJF stands with the CJA in calling for these journalists' immediate release.
A healthy democracy depends on quality journalism. But journalists can’t report on the stories that matter if they aren’t being paid. Add your name to the open letter to support public interest journalism in Australia: https://t.co/TVkWoaM9wc

Australia has passed 130+ national security laws since 2001. A new reform seeking to slash 300 minor secrecy offences is a great step towards transparency, but there is still work to be done before it passes the Senate.

To mark World Press Freedom Day, it was an honour to speak at the Australian Ambassador’s home in Bangkok. At a time when our socials are filled with slop, we need robust, free journalism more than ever. #WPFD2026

A landmark case faces the High Court in early May & the stakes for press freedom are huge.
An animal rights group secretly filmed inside an abattoir & a lower court gave copyright to the abattoir. In the HC we will argue the judgement is devastating for journalists & sources.
The Albanese Government’s new bill slashes 300+ secrecy offences and enshrines ministerial consent for journalist prosecutions, a move the Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom says loosens Australia’s culture of secrecy and boosts press freedoms.

Reports say an Iranian-backed militia has agreed to free journalist Shelly Kittleson. If confirmed, it would be a huge victory for press freedom campaigners & diplomats who worked tirelessly for her release. Journalists must never be pawns in geopolitical battles.
@4JournoFreedom
Journalist Shelly Kittleson has been abducted in Baghdad. We join our colleagues around the world in demanding her release. This is an unacceptable attack on press freedom. Journalists are essential witnesses; not political leverage.
