There is a particular kind of grief in sport that has little to do with defeat. It arrives not when a team loses, but when time finally catches up with the players who once seemed beyond its reach.

The old giants are not all gone yet. Messi remains, still defiant, holding back the inevitable with that familiar left foot and that stubborn little shrug of genius. But even his survival sharpens the feeling rather than easing it. It reminds us that the ending is near.

And perhaps that is enough for now. One last run. One last attempt to hold the darkness off a little longer. One last tournament in which the old gods can still be glimpsed in the light, even if the light is beginning to fade.

Defections are nothing new to the AIADMK. Several senior DMK leaders and former Ministers—including E.V. Velu, KKSSR Ramachandran, S. Muthusamy, Sekar Babu, Anitha Radhakrishnan, and Senthil Balaji—are former AIADMK men. If the DMK retains power, even O. Panneerselvam and Manoj Pandian could find themselves in the Cabinet. The DMK has generally accommodated leaders who crossed over from rival parties and treated them well.

Yet the AIADMK survived those earlier departures because Jayalalithaa's towering political stature held the party together. Most of those leaders left only after falling out with her, not because they doubted the party's electoral prospects.

What is unfolding in the AIADMK today is qualitatively different and poses a major challenge to Edappadi K. Palaniswami's leadership. Prolonged absence from power has intensified internal discontent, prompting leaders to seek greener pastures. In the process, a formidable political party risks being steadily weakened from within.

Politics has repeatedly shown that power shapes loyalty as much as ideology. Time, ultimately, is the great leveller.
