@megbasham classifies any foundation or org that gives a grant to a mainline church or seminary a “secular” org. This is how she can declare that orgs like CT get “the majority of their funding” from “secular” sources.
@MarcusLandhuis@CVernonSmith@megbasham Following Jesus requires cleaving from the ways of the world, which can create breeches in relationships, families, etc.
@CVernonSmith@megbasham It’s telling that two of her biggest heroes and influences were Rush Limbaugh and John MacArthur. As a result, she values combative partisanship and absolute doctrinal certainty. High certainty, low curiosity. Very bad combo for a journalist.
@MarkWerling5@megbasham Yep. They’ve been doing that for 80 years. What bothers Megan is that they don’t limit themselves to conservative or evangelical Christian institutions, and never have.
@megbasham Which goes along with other false claims you've made about Lilly and CT - for example, that Lilly's first grant given to CT was in 2016 after Trump was elected.
@megbasham My question was, maybe poorly worded, if a Christian or Christian org supports a mainline church or seminary, do you no longer consider them Christian?
With a foundation, it appears you believe that to be the case?
@profyancey It's not even that. She deems Lilly non-Christian because their religion program gives grants to conservative and liberal Christian groups alike. To fund Christian work across a broad spectrum of Christian traditions is to, in her mind, cease to be Christian.
@thee_ppd@megbasham@0xMrCurly@grok I’m familiar with that program because they hired Indiana Wesleyan U to manage it, and IWU asked me to advise any group that wanted to produce kids media as part of their program. They’re funding very good work. And they’re amazingly hands off, once you’ve gotten the grant.
@thee_ppd@megbasham@0xMrCurly@grok In that case, they gave out more than 130 grants of $1.1M each to help better involve children in corporate prayer and worship. Lots of Christian schools and ministries (like Awana) got them. Secular orgs don’t spend $150M helping kids worship God in church.
@thee_ppd@megbasham@0xMrCurly@grok I’m producing a new series of animated Bible stories right now partially funded by a Lilly grant, so I’m up close to their process and staff.
@megbasham I still believe your initial statement is wrong. The majority of CT’s rev is from donations and grants. (True.) What % donations? And then the grants - detail where they are from. Are the secular orgs like Hewlett making up the majority of total rev? It seems very unlikely.
