Another week, another own goal. Former DA leader John Steenhuisen is proving, as Minister of Agriculture, to be almost as destructive as the foot-and-mouth disease that he has so dismally failed to contain.

Will the DA drop 'the hydrogen bomb' on Hopefield?

Three thousand hectares of solar panels (2.6 million of them) and a 61ha hydrogen and aviation fuel plant in the pipeline for rural Hopefield.

Oops! This is how seriously Steenhuisen and team mean their assurances that 'the door is always open to farmers'. A request from the farmer organisation FMDResponse SA to co-operate more closerly with the department – inadvertently copied back to the senders. Steenhuisen must go...
Ramaphosa is terrified of facing the impeachment committee. His account of what happened at Phala Phala is tissue-thin, implausible, and riddled with contradictions. He has never had to defend it against a raised eyebrow, never mind hostile questioning. WSM's column on @Politicsweb

What is driving SA’s sudden crime plunge?
The police are reporting a dramatic fall in aggravated robberies. Is it real? And, if so, what explains it? https://t.co/Mldz2HoS1t
It was actually common during the floor crossing era. There are opportunists and careerists in all parties, and they will go where their self-interest leads them. https://t.co/WLF5qbtn0o
Politicians rarely move between parties they regard as fundamentally incompatible.
Yet Liam Jacobs went DA → PA → DA without any obvious ideological conversion in between.
Either his political beliefs changed dramatically twice in a few years, or the distance between the DA and PA is much smaller than voters are being told.
South Africa has a meaningful role to play on the global stage. If it plays that role wisely, it could serve as a genuine balancer in an increasingly fractured twenty-first century world — a country trusted by both East and West precisely because it is beholden to neither. That kind of principled, genuine non-alignment is not weakness. It is strategic intelligence. It would position South Africa to secure favourable trade relationships across geopolitical divides and to be taken seriously as a voice for stability, reason, and honest humanitarianism in global affairs.

FM @RonaldLamola, you blame concerns about violence and failed governance on "MAGA politics." Ghana and Nigeria just airlifted their citizens out of your country. Thousands of South Africans are fleeing to America to escape your government’s Left-wing policies. Unemployment still remains at 33% while you and corrupt government elites get rich while promoting race-based laws and chanting "Kill the Boer." If caring about your own citizens is MAGA, South Africa might want to give it a try.

Advocates of the Joburg Bar caused the old regime endless trouble and embarrassment. It seems that organ is, however, now under the guiding hand of transformationists who will not permit a repetition of such mischief under the new order.
Counterpoint: The Joburg Bar is just putting the requisite checks and balances in place to prevent the emergence of a new Bram Fischer, Isie Maisels, Rex Welsh, Sydney Kentridge, or Johann Kriegler. No more young advocates will be permitted who might go on to contest the dominant racial nationalism of the day.

The official version of Phala Phala is a fairy tale and an insult to intelligence of South Africans. Instead of ducking and diving, President Ramphosa should face the impeachment committee inquiry. After all, if he’s innocent, he’s nothing to fear. WSM’s column on @Politicsweb.
