Bauer said that the bowlers dared the Yankees to join them outside, and Billy Martin and Whitey Ford took them up on the offer.
Joanie Ford, Whitey's wife, asked Bauer to go with them.
The two groups didn't make it out the door. A brawl ensued outside the men's room, and one of the bowlers -- a man named Edwin Jones -- was knocked out with a concussion, a broken jaw, and a broken nose.
Players were fined and some benched.
Whitey Ford was supposed to pitch the next day, but Casey Stengel pulled him.
Casey dropped Hank Bauer to 8th in the lineup, but kept Mantle 3rd.
When asked why Mickey wasn’t punished, Casey said:
"I’m mad at Mantle, too, for being out late. But I’m not mad enough to take a chance on losing a ball game and possibly the pennant."
