19-year-old Lilitha Hanisi went out with friends in Citrusdal and never came home.

She was later found dead in a river.

Another young woman. Another family now waiting for answers. Another murder investigation that has to be properly worked from the first hour, not allowed to drift until public pressure forces movement.

We have spoken a lot about GBV over the past week, but policing has to be at the centre of this conversation.

That means properly resourced FCS units. Detectives with manageable caseloads. Crime intelligence that identifies repeat offenders. Forensic evidence processed quickly enough to actually help an investigation. Dockets that are properly managed. Suspects traced quickly. Prosecutors brought into serious investigations early enough to build cases that will stand up in court.

And when women report threats, stalking, assault or sexual violence, the system has to take them seriously before we are dealing with another murder.

Task teams after women have died are necessary, but they cannot become our normal policing model. We need investigative capacity that works every day, in every province.

Lilitha was 19.

My deepest condolences to her family and friends. Her family deserves answers, and whoever is responsible must be identified, arrested and successfully prosecuted.
