Today the Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy @JenMurnaneOConn launched the Realist Evaluation of Social Prescribing Services in Ireland, she is photographed below at the launch this morning with colleagues from the @roinnslainte, HSE Health and Wellbeing and @GalwayHPRC .

The study aimed to engage with stakeholders to strengthen the evidence for social prescribing by providing a context-sensitive evaluation, to capture the breadth and complexity of social prescribing in Ireland.

To develop a number of recommendations, the research team consulted with and outlined the views of many stakeholders. Social Prescribing service users themselves were the main group consulted and some of their views are included below:

“Well. Some other life events have happened, so I'm back. I have resumed my course at the university. I have a routine, you know, like I'm back to my normal life, so to speak, but I think social prescribing was crucial for me when I was in that time period a few months ago, where I was in that slump. I suppose, you know. It was really important that. It was the only good thing going on for me at the time.” (SUEst03)

“I describe myself as a deflated balloon or a flat balloon, and I need to reflate. And that's what that does for me. It keeps my spirits up. It's maintenance, I think if I didn’t have it, I’d be going downhill, but this way I'm, you know, I’m maintaining, and it's dreadfully important that I do because I can't afford to slump, you know” (SUEst01)

“It gives me more confidence, I'd lot of confidence before, but then as life happens, you know, you kind of lose a bit of confidence. And then when you know you can kind of socialise again with people you know and yeah, that's nice. And that's your groups out there you can just take it out of the house too, because I do get out of the house.” (SUNew01)

💙💛 Warmest congratulations to UCD Professor Mary Horgan on being named Public Sector Leader of the Year at the Business Post Leadership Awards 2025

In addition to serving as Professor of Infectious Diseases at UCD School of Medicine, Professor Horgan is the interim Chief Medical Officer at @roinnslainte, the Department of Health.

Professor Horgan is a national and international leader in medical education and training, in infectious diseases and public health, and has spearheaded medical and scientific education in Ireland.

Previously Dean of the Medical School at University College Cork (UCC), she was elected as the first female President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland since its founding in 1654 and was re-elected to a second term in 2020.

She has served as President of the Infectious Diseases Society of Ireland and on the boards of the Health Products Regulatory Authority, the Irish Blood Transfusion Service, Mercy University Hospital, and the Governing Body of UCC.

She also served on the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), led the expert advisory group on rapid testing, and chaired Ireland’s first National Research Ethics Committee. In November 2023, Professor Horgan was appointed by the Minister for Health to lead the design of a new agency to address emerging health threats. She was awarded the UCD Alumni Award for Health in 2019 and has received several honorary fellowships in recognition of her contributions to medicine.

A problem shared…
That was the theme of Tuesday’s First All-Island Health Protection and Health Equity Conference, held at the iconic Titanic Conference Centre in Belfast. This was the first joint conference hosted by HSE Public Health: Health Protection and Public Health Agency (PHA) and featured a powerful keynote address from Dr Mike Ryan, Former Director of Emergency Response Division at the World Health Organization.

We were honoured to welcome Professor Sir Michael McBride P, Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Health NI and Professor Mary Horgan, Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Health - Ireland and Professor of Infectious Diseases at University College Dublin, to this landmark event.

National and international speakers shared insights on a wide range of topics, including:
🔹 Equity in immunisation programmes
🔹 Perspectives on vaccination from people living in prison
🔹 Cross-border molecular epidemiology using whole genome sequencing
🔹 Responses to measles outbreaks across the island

Reflecting on the event, Dr Éamonn O'Moore, Director of National Health Protection, described it as:
“A truly historic occasion held in a truly historic location, demonstrating the joint commitment to work together to protect the health of our respective populations on this shared island which enjoys high degrees of connectivity across the two jurisdictions.”

This multi-disciplinary conference highlighted shared challenges and the urgent need for collaboration to address current and future public health threats. Both public health agencies reaffirmed their commitment to tackling health inequities by engaging with communities in culturally competent ways - building the trust essential to protecting and promoting health across the island.
