Locking covers over start buttons or push switches are surprisingly common… but they don’t meet OSHA’s lockout/tagout requirements.
Under 29 CFR 1910.147(b), push buttons, selector switches, and other control circuit devices are not energy isolating devices.
Here’s why it matters:
These switches usually operate at low voltage and control a solenoid or relay that actually switches the power. That creates multiple potential failure points — a bad switch, a shorted wire, or a stuck solenoid — any of which can allow unexpected energization.
OSHA requires isolation using a mechanical device that physically prevents the transmission or release of energy (disconnect switches, circuit breakers, line valves, blocks, etc.). A locking cover over a control-circuit push button doesn’t do that.
Have you seen this practice in the field? Drop a comment — I’d be interested to hear how it’s being handled where you work.
Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere… and they can burn your business (or home) to the ground.
We use them in phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, scooters, and more. They’re cheap, powerful, and convenient — but they’re also one of the fastest-growing fire hazards in workplaces and homes today.
Here’s what most people don’t realize:
-A damaged battery can spontaneously ignite with no warning and no heat source
-Even if the fire is put out, other cells inside can reignite later
-These fires burn at extreme temperatures and spread incredibly fast
-Standard water or ABC extinguishers often make them worse (lithium reacts violently with water)
-The toxic, flammable gases can turn a fire blanket into a fireball
Simple steps to protect your team and facility:
-Never charge batteries overnight or while unattended
-Immediately pull any battery that gets unusually hot, won’t hold a charge, or shows damage
-Never buy cheap off-brand batteries — they fail safety testing at much higher rates
-Rotate batteries out on a schedule (they degrade over time)
-Keep anything with a lithium battery away from emergency exits
Want to get ahead of this risk? We help companies build practical lithium-ion battery safety programs, including proper storage, charging protocols, and emergency response.

HR Professionals: Are you accidentally writing job posts that scare away the best safety candidates?
Many companies copy-paste credentials from old postings or competitors — and end up with the wrong person (or no one at all).
Common mistakes we see:
-Requiring a CSP for roles where it’s not actually needed
-Asking for an OSHA Outreach Instructor… then never letting them teach
-Telling qualified OSHA 501/511 instructors they’re “not qualified” because they don’t have a 10/30 card (when they’re literally authorized to teach the class)
At Provenio Consulting, we’ve worked with hundreds of safety professionals across nearly every industry. We can help you:
✅ Cut through the credential confusion ✅ Identify exactly what your operation actually needs ✅Develop and promote strong internal candidates
Stop guessing. Let’s get the right safety professional (or program) in place so your team stays protected and productive.

Most fire extinguisher training is fake. This one isn’t.
Real fire. Real extinguishers. Real pressure.
If your employees are expected to use a fire extinguisher in an emergency, OSHA requires them to be trained. Classroom PowerPoints and simulator apps don’t give them the muscle memory or confidence they’ll actually need when it matters.
We do hands-on training with real fire so your team walks away knowing exactly what it feels like to put one out. No guessing. No “I think I got it.”
Watch the 11-second clip. Want your crew to get the real thing? Comment “FIRE” below or DM me. I’ll send you dates and pricing for your next hands-on session.

This week, St. Paul Fire Department joined for a fun demonstration for confined space rescue! The hardworking crew at the MN State Capitol Complex got some hands-on confined space entry training. I love working with the people who make the world go-round!
Our goal is to make training so engaging, they cannot forget how & why to do the job safely!
Prepping for confined space training on Monday. What better snack for maintenance crews who will be out practicing confined space safety than beef sticks & jerky?
We are doing confined space trainings for dozens of State of MN Facilities Management team members, who regularly work on confined spaces at the State Capitol Complex. The training will include the St. Paul Fire Department's Technical Rescue team to work with the team for part of the time.
Safety training should be fun! If your company wants training that is fun and engaging, give us a call today! If you want death by PowerPoint and the same old videos, call our competitors. But we really think your employees would prefer training fun and beef sticks.
Most workplace accidents happen within a new hire's first 90 days, but the right training can change that.
