We describe a fundamental principle of how clonal expansion shapes DNA methylation landscapes. We use this to detect clonal hematopoiesis - a major risk factor for cancer & CVD. ☄️is mutation-agnostic & scalable: https://t.co/Tl2MeUPeXg🧵👇
Sean Eddy developed profile HMMs in the 1990s, ultimately leading to his HMMER project, which includes JackHMMER that AlphaFold relies on. Apparently his work has been determined to be "of absolutely no value to the US taxpayer". Obviously that's not true.

@LocasaleLab If that has been your experience it reflects badly on you not PhD students. The only times I have seen this happen is when supervisors crush their hopes and dreams. Most PhD students deal with their crappy salaries because they believe in what they do. Take that away… well
@AlejoFraticelli@jrblundell Apologies Alejo and Jamie for hijacking, using this to highlight our findings, which are conceptually related. https://t.co/U5meOccULb
There’s a now generation of very good scientists in Spain that are the product of a golden age in public universities, where many talented Spanish researchers returned to in the 80/90s and dedicated themselves to teaching. With the lack of current Uni funding, it may be the last.

@SciencNews If you stay in academia and see it as ‘just a job’ go to a place where you are getting paid better. You stay in academia (long term) because you love it.
@SciencNews@Prof_GD_Foster I blogged about this over ten years ago - the problem is that academia is a competition (for funding, to be the first to publish etc) and you are competing against people who DON'T see it as a job, who are happy to work long hours 7 days a week because they love it.
