Deep beneath the surface of the Coral Sea, an extraordinary discovery is unfolding. 🌊 More than 110 new species of fish and invertebrates have been identified by marine taxonomists in the largely unexplored deep waters of the Coral Sea Marine Park, off the Queensland coast.
These incredible findings were made during a recent expedition aboard the @CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator, which explored depths of 200 to 3,000 metres in the Coral Sea Marine Park – a vast, mostly uncharted area of nearly one million square kilometres. 🐟🌊
Among the discoveries are new species of rays, a deepwater catshark, a chimaera, and a dazzling array of brittlestars, crabs, sea anemones, and sponges. 🦀 The team even captured stunning footage of the rare sand tiger shark, a deepwater relative of the grey nurse shark, using RV Investigator’s deep-towed camera. 🎥

An echidna expert from @UQ_News says not much is known about how many echidnas there are in the wild. It has led to concerns there is no way to track the impacts of urbanisation, climate change and cars. More: https://t.co/ldq2jf1Tla
This ground-breaking work from is supported by the Drought and Climate Adaptation Program and the Queensland Reef Water Quality Program. The innovation is set to elevate grazing management through a new FORAGE report on https://t.co/z3s9tb4hRv.
Managing pastures just got smarter! DETSI and DPI scientists are transforming grazing with drones equipped with hyperspectral and lidar sensors. These cutting-edge tools provide detailed insights into pasture conditions, revealing protein and fibre levels across paddocks.
This game-changing tech helps producers:
✅ Optimise stocking rates to prevent overgrazing.
✅ Strategically plan infrastructure placement, such as fencing and water points, to maximise grazing efficiency and animal welfare.
