Thank you, Stewart and the IPNLF team, for visiting us. It was a pleasure to show you our process and facility. Your 'Canspiracy' campaign is a beacon of hope for sustainable fisheries, and we're proud to be part of this journey with IPNLF, a key partner for Maldives Tuna - World's Most Sustainable. Looking forward to more collaborative efforts! 🐟🌊 💪 🤝
An exciting mission in #CaboDelgado.
#Fisheries experts from @FAO HQ & Fiji are here to support the implementation of a @noradno-funded pilot project for sustainable fisheries 🐟
The mission started with a meeting at the 🇲🇿 Fisheries & Aquaculture Development Institute HQ.

Yayasan IPNLF Indonesia (YII) recently held a fisher workshop in Kawa, #Indonesia, to help improve #fish handling practices and preserve the quality of their catch. Over 70 #fishers attended - encouraging signs of their eagerness to participate in the global market.
Annually implementing a 3 month (or more) dFAD Closure across the Indian Ocean may be the biggest single opportunity we have to recover the regions yellowfin and bigeye tuna stocks.
Lack of science for Indian Ocean dFAD Closure is no longer an excuse.

Last weekend, we visited the UK offices of satellite company @IridiumComm to remind them of the destruction their #satellites are causing in the Indian Ocean.

Between 1960-65 & 2008-12, there was a x55 drop in marlin catch rates.
After two #UNOceanConference without any meaningful discussion about #overfishing, #UNOC2025 has to put unsustainable fishing front and center.
Are #RFMOs working adequately?
How do we reverse #overfishing?
@GlobalTuna@Daniel_Suddaby Agreed but hard to cooperate when one group's determinedly protecting commercial interests of purse seine fleets and others are pursuing (now objected to) conservation measures to reign purse seiners in as the largest harvesters of Indian Ocean tuna for the sake of sustainability
Yet another reason why consumers should use the IPNLF Sourcing Transparency Platform (STP) - https://t.co/f4kcaHOAAH - to only buy tuna products from one-by-one tuna fishing vessels that naturally lack major risk factors for such abuse.

To make matters worse, almost half of their catch was exported out of the Indian Ocean region as frozen raw material for relatively little to no benefit to the developing coastal states surrounding the Indian Ocean.
Purse seiners caught a third of the entire Indian Ocean tropical tuna catch in 2021, an increase of 40% from 2015, when yellowfin was first found to be overfished. This was achieved by increasing use of drifting FADs

With Yemen & Mauritius also now objecting to new dFAD regulations in the Indian Ocean, it unfortunately seems that politics and short term financial greed are again driving decisions in contradiction to sustainable and equitable fisheries management.
#tuna#chooseyourtuna#dFAD
The EU fleet catches millions of juvenile tuna around harmful drifting fish aggregating devices (#FADs) in the Indian Ocean where stocks are already badly overfished.
We call on the EU to take responsibility for its fleet and stop objecting to the #IOTC FADs resolution.
