Every October, we celebrate Black History Month. As part of this, it’s important to recognise and celebrate the diverse past, present and future of the College.

Throughout the month, we mark the contribution of some of our Black psychiatrists to mental health services and use the occasion to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black people to society.

We’re thrilled that our President, Professor Subodh Dave, has been named in HSJ's list of the 75 most influential Black, Asian and minority ethnic people in health.

The list celebrates leaders from across English health and care and it's great to see so many psychiatrists and mental health colleagues recognised for their leadership and impact across health and care.

This World Mental Health Day, the theme is "Lived experiences heard: Real voices, real change". Behind every statistic about mental health is a person, and only by listening to those voices can we work to improve mental health services.

Many of the people who shape our work have first-hand experience of mental illness, as patients, carers or family members. Their perspectives sit alongside clinical expertise in the information we produce. You can read our award-winning information on mental illnesses and mental health problems, which is written by doctors with input from patients and carers.

For young people, parents and carers, we have dedicated information on young people's mental health, written to help families understand what young people are going through and where to find help.

If you're looking for support or want to understand your options, our pages on support, care and treatment explain what treatments are available and what to expect.

If you'd prefer a printed copy, you can also order our mental health leaflets, written by doctors for patients and carers.

President Prof Subodh Dave responds to the Independent Review into mental health conditions, ADHD & autism in England:

“Millions of people have had their lives turned upside down by poor mental health, including illnesses and neurodevelopmental conditions that are often severe, disabling and overlapping. We must reduce unacceptably long waiting lists for high-quality assessments and improve access to specialist treatments.”

Tomorrow is #WorldMentalHealthDay, and this year's global message is simple:

'Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change'.

In healthcare and beyond, we all have a part to play in ensuring people with lived experience of mental health conditions are listened to, meaningfully involved and placed at the centre of the decisions that effect their lives.

To support this, we've highlighted a few resources that can help you develop a more patient-centred approach to care.

Explore these and more on our @rcpsych eLearning Hub.
