Communiqué of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on the Adoption of the “Correct The Map” Resolution.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, @ymahmoudali welcomes the adoption today by the United Nations General Assembly of the resolution championed by the Republic of Togo on behalf of the African Group, calling for a fairer and more accurate cartographic representation of Africa and other regions of the world.
The Chairperson particularly commends the leadership of the Republic of Togo and the commitment of the President of the Council, H.E. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, under whose leadership Togo championed this initiative on behalf of Africa and helped mobilize broad support within the international community. He also congratulates the Member States of the African Union and the African Group in New York for their unity and collective mobilization in support of this initiative.
The adoption of this resolution marks an important step forward. Designed in the 16th century primarily for navigation, the Mercator projection does not accurately reflect the relative surface areas of the different regions of the world and significantly understates the true size of the African continent.
Beyond cartography, this initiative underscores the importance of representing Africa on the basis of objective and scientifically established realities. In this regard, the Chairperson encourages international institutions, educational systems, publishers and digital platforms to progressively promote the use of cartographic representations that more accurately reflect actual land areas.
The African Union Commission will continue to work with Togo, Member States and relevant partners to support efforts towards the implementation of this initiative.
Africa must be represented as it truly is: in its true dimensions and in its rightful place in the world.

On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted an African proposal for a new world map, which shows countries’ true size relative to one another.
In favor: 164
Against: 1
Abstentions: 6
UN General Assembly votes overwhelmingly in support of African resolution on accurate maps. The vote addresses the longstanding injustice of Mercator-based maps, which distort Africa's size, showing it as much smaller than it really is.
🎉Congratulations to the delegation of Togo 🇹🇬 on the adoption this morning by the #UNGA of resolution A/80/L.104, “Correct the Map”, an @_AfricanUnion initiative promoting more accurate and equitable global cartographic representation, particularly of #Africa.
A significant step towards ensuring that the map of the world reflects Africa’s true scale and place in the world.

Congratulations to the delegation of #Togo 🇹🇬 and the Africa Group on the adoption this morning by the #UNGA of resolution A/80/L.104, “Correct the Map.”
First endorsed by the African Union Assembly in February and officially passed at the United Nations today, this @_AfricanUnion initiative marks a historic step toward accurate and equitable global cartographic representation.
For centuries, the Mercator projection distorted global geography, shrinking Africa to the size of Greenland when our continent is actually 14 times larger. Today’s resolution promotes equal-area maps like Equal Earth across classrooms, media, and international institutions ensuring the world map finally reflects Africa’s true scale, weight, and place in the world.
HISTORIC MOMENT: THE WORLD HAS CHOSEN TO CORRECT THE MAP
Today, the United Nations has taken a historic step with the adoption of the “Correct the Map” Resolution.
This decision is about much more than cartography. It is about justice, dignity, equality and the way we represent our world.
For too long, inherited cartographic representations have distorted our perception of the true size and place of Africa and other regions of the world. Correcting the map means correcting the way we see the world.
On behalf of the President @FEGnassingbe , I express my sincere gratitude to all Member States that supported this initiative and helped turn this vision into a reality.
This is a victory for Africa, but above all, it is a victory for everyone who believes in a fairer, more balanced and more accurately represented world.
History will remember this day as the moment when the international community chose to see the world with greater truth and fairness.
The map is changing. Our perspective is changing. And our world is moving toward greater equity.
