La detención de Javier Oropeza es un grave retroceso para la transición en Venezuela.

Que un opositor regrese al país después de más de dos años en el exilio y termine detenido apenas 48 horas después demuestra que el aparato de persecución sigue vivo.

No puede haber una transición real con las mismas estructuras que durante años persiguieron, encarcelaron y silenciaron a los venezolanos.

El SEBIN y todo el aparato represivo tienen que ser desmantelados. Venezuela necesita libertad, no miedo.

Some personal news I’m grateful to share. After a medical appointment at the Mayo Clinic this week, my pathology results came back clear.

I am cancer free.

We welcome the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s passage of the Pray Safe Act, an important step toward ensuring houses of worship have the resources and training needed to keep their communities safe.

Yesterday, the Pray Safe Act moved forward in committee by voice vote. I’m proud to lead this bipartisan effort with Congresswoman Grace Meng to help faith communities better prepare for threats, know where to turn for help, and access the resources they need to protect their congregations.

This is about keeping people safe while protecting something fundamental: the freedom to worship.

Environmental resilience starts before the next storm.

Seeing a problem before it becomes a crisis means doing the work to solve it. That’s why I delivered more than $2.4 million for Key Biscayne.

$2 million will help address flooding around Key Biscayne K-8, and $412,500 will support a University of Miami study on how an offshore reef could help reduce beach erosion and protect our coastline.

My job in Congress is simple: fight for the resources South Florida needs and make sure they deliver results here at home. And that’s exactly what I’m doing.

Beijing is expanding its reach in our own backyard.

China is pouring hundreds of millions into Punta Huete, an airbase in Nicaragua capable of accommodating strategic bombers. A Chinese bomber operating from there could be in Washington, D.C in three hours.

So today, I asked the State Department directly: Are we concerned about this growing foothold in our hemisphere?

Because if we are, we have to stop it before it becomes permanent.

Officially dictators. Ortega and Murillo have erased what remained of democracy in Nicaragua.

They persecute the Church. Silence journalists. Crush political opposition. And now, they have closed the door on real elections.

At the same time, they are deepening ties with America’s adversaries in the heart of our hemisphere.

Today at 2 PM, I will chair a congressional hearing to expose what is happening in Nicaragua and examine the threat this regime poses to the United States and our region.
