Network of health professionals within private and public facilities in Kenya committed to evidence-based information and quality, comprehensive RH services
Every maternal death tells a story. ๐
Not just of what happened in that delivery room.
But of what could have been prevented. ๐
Last week, we joined the @MoH_DRMH and maternal health partners at the First Quarterly Postpartum Community of Practice Meeting; and the energy in that room was impossible to ignore.
One goal brought everyone together:
Improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in Kenya.
Here is what was on the table ๐
โข Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR): When a mother or baby dies, we must understand why, so it never happens again.
โข Post-Abortion Care: Every woman deserves safe, dignified care. No exceptions.
โข Obstetric Fistula Strategic Plan: Reviewing and strengthening the roadmap for a condition that quietly destroys women's lives and dignity.
โข Obstetric Fistula Toolkit Validated โ : A critical tool, now ready to be used where it is needed most.
โข Digital Reporting and Accountability: Because better data saves lives. If we cannot measure it, we cannot fix it. ๐
But here is what made this meeting different. ๐ก
It was not just another room full of recommendations.
It was a room full of people committed to moving from talk to action. ๐ค
Stronger partnerships. Better data. More responsive health systems.
That is what better care for women and newborns actually looks like, not on paper, but on the ground. ๐
At RHNK, we will keep showing up, alongside government and partners, to build systems that do not just deliver care, but learn, respond and improve. ๐ช
Because every mother deserves not just to survive childbirth.
She deserves to thrive beyond it. ๐
To every health worker, policymaker and partner in that room last week, thank you. The work continues. ๐ฅ

๐ฉธ "It's just a pad."
But what if that pad determines whether a girl stays in school, a woman participates fully at work, or someone can access a product that meets their needs?
Suddenly, it isn't just a pad.
At the Kenya Menstrual Economy Conference, hosted by @KICDKenya, we joined government, industry, researchers and partners to explore how we can build a menstrual economy that works for everyone.
We shared findings from our pilot study on the Perception and Acceptability of Reusable Menstrual Pads in the Workplace, contributing evidence to conversations on innovation, inclusion and sustainable menstrual health solutions.
Because investing in menstrual health isn't just about periods, it's about dignity, opportunity and unlocking potential.

๐ A contraceptive that isn't on the shelf when someone needs it is more than a stock-out. It's a missed opportunity. A delayed decision. Sometimes, it's the difference between someone accessing care or leaving empty-handed.
This week, we are in @BungomaCountyKe alongside the @MOH_Kenya - @MoH_DRMH, @UNFPAKen and the Bungoma County Department of Health, working to strengthen reproductive health commodity security. ๐ค
We are reviewing the 2025/2026 Logistics Management Assessment (#LMA) and Inventory Control Assessment (#ICA) findings, identifying gaps and developing practical county-led solutions to ensure health facilities have the right commodities, in the right quantities, at the right time. ๐ฆ
Because behind every reproductive health commodity is a community relying on it. Stronger supply chains mean stronger health systems and uninterrupted access to the care people need.

Strong health systems are not built by accident. ๐ชThey are built through partnerships like this one. ๐ฅ
This week, our ED @nellymunyasia Munyasia sat down with Mr @Collins Ajwang, President of the National Nurses Association of Kenya, for a serious conversation about what it takes to strengthen sexual, reproductive and maternal health services in Kenya. ๐ค
Think about this ๐
Every adolescent girl who walks into a health facility, nervous, uncertain, is the person who determines whether she gets care with dignity.๐ฉโโ๏ธ A nurse.
Nurses are the backbone of Kenya's health system. Strengthening them is not a programme activity. It is the foundation. ๐๏ธ
Through this partnership, NNAK will support the training and continuous professional development of mid-level healthcare providers, building a workforce that delivers quality, adolescent-responsive SRMH services. ๐ก
This feeds directly into the Her Health Initiative, five counties, real systems change, built to last long after any project cycle ends. ๐
We are not building a programme. We are building systems that work for her. ๐ฅ

โLanguage should not be a barrier.โ
The launch of the Nena na Binti comic book marked a powerful step towards making sexual and reproductive health information accessible, relatable, and youth-friendly.
Born from a simple but important question โ how do we ensure the right information reaches every young person in a way they understand? โ the comic series blends language, culture, and storytelling to create conversations that resonate with young people across different communities.
As shared during the launch, open conversations with young people matter. Providing information in languages and formats they connect with helps build trust, encourages dialogue, and empowers them to make informed decisions.
The launch also highlighted the importance of supporting youth-led innovation and creative solutions that address real challenges facing young people today. As one speaker noted, this is not just about launching a bookโit is about continuing the work and investing in ideas that create lasting impact.

โFor African countries to move away from donor dependency, we all need to strengthen our domestic resource mobilization.โ โ Hon. Dr. Joyce Moriku
At the 9th Pan-African Adolescent and Youth SRHR Conference, Hon. Dr. Joyce Moriku challenged African nations to rethink sustainability and take bold steps toward self-reliance.
She emphasized that ending donor dependency requires stronger domestic resource mobilization, improved tax systems, expanded markets, and greater investment in local industries and raw materials. By adding value to our own resources and strengthening intra-African trade, countries can build resilient systems that are less reliant on external support.
Her message resonates strongly with the conferenceโs call for youth-led systems change. Sustainable financing is essential to ensuring that young people across Africa continue to access quality health services, information, and opportunities that enable them to thrive.
As conversations on SRHR financing continue, the challenge remains clear: investing in our own systems today is key to securing Africaโs future tomorrow.
๐ฅ Listen to Hon. Dr. Joyce Morikuโs reflections on building sustainable, locally financed systems for Africa.

โIf you gave me an additional dollar, I would invest it in systems.โ โ Lucy Kimondo, Ag. Director General, @NCPD_Kenya.
At a time when conversations around health financing continue to dominate the SRHR agenda, Lucy Kimondo reminded us that sustainable change begins with strong systems.
She emphasized that one of the greatest challenges facing Kenya is fragmented and haphazard investment. When countries intentionally invest in health systems, the impact is far-reaching: more health workers, functional referral mechanisms, reliable access to medicines, and efficient service delivery.
Every dollar and every shilling can deliver meaningful results when supported by strong systems. Without these foundations, resources are stretched, services become inconsistent, and communities continue to face barriers in accessing quality healthcare.
As we continue the conversations from the 9th Pan-African Adolescent and Youth SRHR Conference, her message reinforces an important truth: achieving universal access to sexual and reproductive health services requires not only increased financing, but strategic investment in resilient, people-centered health systems.

1.2 million unintended pregnancies. 290,000 unsafe abortions. Thousands of preventable maternal deaths.
These are not just statistics; they represent interrupted dreams, lost opportunities, and growing inequalities that disproportionately affect women, girls, and young people across Kenya.
The warning that Kenya could face 1.2 million unintended pregnancies due to family planning commodity shortages is a stark reminder that access to sexual and reproductive health services is not optionalโit is essential. Delays in financing and disruptions in the supply of family planning commodities threaten years of progress in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights.
These concerns strongly echoed the conversations held during the recently concluded 9th RHNK Pan-African Adolescent and Youth SRHR Conference, where young people, policymakers, advocates, and partners called for increased domestic financing, stronger health systems, and meaningful youth engagement in shaping SRHR policies and programs.
As we continue advancing the conference theme of youth-led systems change, this serves as a reminder that sustainable investments in SRHR are critical to ensuring that young people can exercise their rights, make informed choices, and achieve their full potential.
No young person should have their future determined by stock-outs, funding gaps, or limited access to essential reproductive health services.

โAfricaโs demographic dividend will only be realized if todayโs adolescents are healthy, educated, empowered, and actively engaged.โ
Speaking at the 9th RHNK Pan-African Adolescent and Youth SRHR Conference, Dr. Jacqueline Kisia head of adolescents health section at @MoH_DRMH called on governments, development partners, and civil society to move beyond dialogue and translate commitments into concrete action.
She emphasized the need for sustainable domestic financing for adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health, stronger implementation of laws and policies, expanded youth-friendly services, comprehensive sexuality education, and inclusive approaches that ensure no young person, especially the most vulnerable, is left behind.
Her message reinforces this yearโs call for youth-led systems change and reminds us that investing in young people today is essential to building Africaโs future.

Chini ya Mnazi continues to prove that meaningful youth engagement is not an eventโit is a movement rooted in voice, agency, and collective action.
Chini ya Mnazi Volume 2: The Youth Power Shift brought together young people in a vibrant, culturally grounded space where conversations on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights became more than discussionsโthey became expressions of agency, creativity, and action.
Convened by @rhnkorg in partnership with @DreamAchieversk and @PSKenya_, the session created a safe and inclusive environment where young people could learn, share experiences, challenge myths, and amplify their voices on issues affecting their health and wellbeing.
As part of the broader theme, โStrengthening SRHR to Achieve Youth Agency, Full Potential and Meaningful Engagement in Africaโs Dynamic Socio-Political and Economic Landscape,โ Chini ya Mnazi Volume 2 reaffirmed that young people are not merely participants in SRHR conversationsโthey are leaders, advocates, creators, and drivers of change.
The Youth Power Shift is here, and young people continue to shape the conversations, decisions, and futures that matter most.
