Auto Shift allows your chainring to move independently from your cranks, so you can shift without pedaling. Integrated with your Eagle Transmission, it monitors your riding & pedal speed to shift automatically, keeping you in the right gear and focused on the trail. #SRAM
Presta valves, and how to use them
On this tyre, the suggested pressures are quite clearly labelled (max 65psi) but it'll always be written somewhere around the sidewall of the tyre. If it's min/max, it's fairly straightforward. If it just says max, the min is ~10% less
3 suppliers in the last few years have now gone bust without a peep. Without @cyclingindustry I wouldn't have found out until I went to place an order.
Poor form.
Next stage - fitting the new bottom bracket and then starting to refit the components one by one
Before long, this bike will be as good as new (and available to buy... 😉)
Refurbing an old bike, part 1 of an occasional series: the Bottom Bracket ("BB")
This bike was donated by a friend who barely used it in the last 10 years.
After stripping the components from the frame, it's time to get to work starting with tapping and facing the BB shell
You may notice a slight nick towards the bottom of the right hand side, the previous owner had a minor off (one of the reasons it's lain unused for a while!) but after facing the edge is flush with nothing protruding.
The last photo shows how flat the edge now is 👌
Fascinating. Incredible attention to detail (as you'd expect) but such traditional technology
Threaded headsets, adjustable dropouts, and of course the good old-fashioned steel frame!

One of the best ways you can save yourself the hassle of a full substation replacement is a cheap chain checker. This style is around £5 and does a great job
Simply place the hooked end on any chain roller (as in the pic) and then allow the pointy end to drop where it wants to
At 0.75% wear, you can usually change just the chain and away you go
If the 1.0% measure drops in, you may well need to change the cassette/block as well (and if it's really worn, the chainring(s) 🫣)
For the sake of £5 or so, you could save yourself a small fortune in future
Most will have at least 2 measurements on them, on opposite sides. Start with the smaller (in this case, 0.75%). Always check in a few spots to be sure
If the checker sits like this, you're not at the marked wear yet. If it slots all the way in, you've reached that level of wear
If anybody is looking for a new bike for the new year, a customer is looking to sell this Specialized Sirrus (size S). Bought in summer along with a couple of others, this has seen minimal use.
Customer looking for ~£300 but open to sensible offers
Get in touch if interested!
Merry Christmas to all our customers old, new and regular
Your support throughout the year is much appreciated
Happy cycling if you're out and about, and if you're not then we hope you have a restful day!
This is sad news, Islabikes are excellent: quality components, lightweight frames and just generally as good as you can get for children's bikes
They are(/were) relatively expensive but there was always a second-hand market
The bike industry is in trouble.
Islabikes is solvent but trading conditions so tough that neither founder Isla Rowntree nor Tim Goodall (who MBO'd the business 3 years ago) want to continue. Company is therefore to shutter when current stocks are all sold. https://t.co/BCCLFWp9Uh
