A question of my own for this growing rpg hive mind.
I find myself struggling - as a player in online games - to stay engaged with the session, and am unable to grok just why. My attention is just not held like when around a physical table.
Thoughts or suggestions?
@mapledyne Your instinct to protect player agency is spot on. IMO, impinging on agency should only ever be done sparingly, with clear boundaries/structure, and ONLY with player consent. And then, only for good story reasons.
@mapledyne Watch the players carefully. If they’re hanging on your words, making suggestions, and trying to do things in character - especially all at the same time - you’ve got them. If they’re quiet, or seem board or distracted, they are likely feeling out of options and discouraged.
@mapledyne Building up table trust so they always know you are trying to help them have an good game rather than just trying to beat them down is helpful too.
Do you have a specific situation in mind? Past or current game? How did you handle it, or how are you planning to handle it? 3/3
@mapledyne My suggestion is to make sure there are always options for the characters to get out of whatever trouble and be encouraging when they chase them. Use lot's of "yes and," keep the pace up to keep them focused and excited, and make it clear your are excited for them to succeed. 2/3
