Plainfield South used to offer just one section of weight training during the school day.
“We now have 7 weight training sections and hope to have 10-12 by next year. Getting everyone on the same page has taken work, but it is paying off in a big way.”

We’re told to exercise because it’s “good for us”.
But are health benefits enough incentive for most people to exercise regularly?
Truth is, most health benefits associated with exercise are both time-delayed and intangible.
And both of these factors tend to devalue these benefits.
Couple this with our tendency to:
- Avoid effort
- Prioritise immediate rewards, and
- Play down our risk of future negative events
For many, the short-term costs of exercise outweigh the long-term benefits.
It’s tough to compete with other more sedentary options providing immediate rewards with minimal (or no) effort.
Part of the solution?
To increase our focus on the many short-term benefits of exercise - such as enhanced pleasure, mood, or enjoyment.
If we don’t exercise for long-term health benefits, we should just because it can make us feel good.

@Raider_SC Earlier this year, HHS teacher, Jim McFarland, was once again published in JOPERD for his work in developing resistance training skill literacy in youth. Congrats!
The percent of inactive kids (81%) mirrors the percent of inactive adults. It's time to focus on a more holistic definition of our terms, such as exercise and fitness Kids and Teens Face Physical Inactivity Crisis https://t.co/09VKc4awyi
Important - a meta-analysis of 53 studies finds that resistance training not only boosts physical fitness in school-age kids but also enhances their cognition, academic results, and classroom behaviour. ( We need physical activity every day in schools secondary and primary )
An honor to be a part of the NSCA National Convention in Las Vegas NV as a speaker, colleague, and attendee. There are over 3000 attendees at this international organizations event!

Multiple strategies consistent with a socioecological approach will be needed to move population-level participation in strength-building activities to the desired level. BJSM Editorial https://t.co/WqlOdfnJej
The best way to get the most out of someone is to make them feel secure enough where they can take risks and fail.
Most of us don't reach our potential because we default to protective mode.
Threatening & demanding makes us protect further. Security and belonging frees us up.
