I had a conversation today about the difference between "kindness" & "niceness" in leadership so I decided to post about it. Scottish hospices also face around £2.5m of additional National Insurance contributions next year. If the Scottish Government intend to cover these costs in the NHS using Barnett consequentials, they should do so in hospices too. 🟨

I strongly welcome the Scottish Government commitment to link hospice funding to NHS pay awards from next year, but urgent help is also needed right now. The crisis in hospice funding has been caused by soaring NHS pay awards over many years. 👇🧵

On pay parity, much detailed work is needed to get the baseline right ahead of next year. This requires focused engagement between hospices and civil servants and inevitably some in-year support. 👇

I’m at #HospiceUKConf today. There is an overwhelming message that this is a sector ambitious to deliver the highest quality care to help people live well, but requires urgent financial support to survive. Governments across the UK must help fund hospice care differently.

Yesterday I gave evidence to @ScotParl on assisted dying, a complex & sensitive area, particularly for young people. CHAS has not taken a moral position for or against the principle, but has expressed significant concerns with the detail of the proposals in the Bill.

These include the imprecise and broad definition of terminal illness, the lack of rationale for the age of 16, assessing capacity, safeguarding and child and adult protection, the need for a differentiated approach for young people, the risks of self-imposed duress...
