Today, inaugurated the Guwahati Campus of Pune Institute of Business Management (PIBM) at Khanapara. A NAAC ‘A’ accredited institution approved by AICTE, PIBM has been at the forefront of management education and industry-oriented learning.

The first batch of the MBA programme begins this year, with nearly 75 students enrolled in the first year. The new campus will contribute significantly to strengthening quality management education, not only in Assam but across the Northeast.

Wishing the institution, faculty and students every success as they embark on this new journey of learning, innovation and excellence.

Attended the 65th Foundation Day celebration of 𝐆𝐚𝐮𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐢 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞. Established in 1962, this heritage institution has played a significant role in advancing commerce education in Assam. I extend my best wishes to the college fraternity on this special occasion.

Commerce is the lifeline of a country’s economy, connecting enterprise, trade, finance and employment. With GCC now granted autonomous status, I urged the students to develop a future-ready mindset in response to the rapidly changing economic landscape and harness emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence to strengthen their knowledge, skills and employability.

At present, only 55 colleges in the State offer commerce education. Our Government will soon take steps to expand commerce education across Assam, creating greater opportunities for our youth and strengthening the State’s economic ecosystem.

𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐦: 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟕–𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟏, Vol. I, edited by eminent historian 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐚𝐣𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐚 and published by the Publication Board Assam, is an important addition to the historiography of post-Independence Assam. Released in 2024, this substantial volume examines a decisive period during which Assam, and indeed the wider Northeast, underwent profound political, demographic and territorial transformations.

The Publication Board Assam had earlier published the political history of colonial Assam from 1826 to 1947 in three volumes. However, no single comprehensive work had examined the State’s history between 1947 and 1971. This volume fills that important gap and represents the outcome of Professor Saikia’s decades of research.

In his foreword, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma observes that Assam confronted exceptional political, administrative, financial and demographic challenges, many rooted in the late colonial period and Partition. Movements for improved communication, industrialisation, linguistic and cultural rights, and constitutional safeguards for indigenous communities reflected these deep anxieties. He also emphasises that peace, cooperation and development are inseparable, and that Assam must move beyond anger and distrust towards sustainable and inclusive growth.

For Assam, 1947 meant much more than a transfer of power. Partition separated Sylhet from the province, disrupted established economic and communication networks, and transformed Assam into a sensitive international border state. Refugee movements and migration, together with continuing uncertainties over identity, land and citizenship, deeply influenced its subsequent politics.

The book also explores the reorganisation of composite Assam, relations between the plains and hills, linguistic movements, tribal aspirations, economic development, the tea industry and relations with the Central Government. It examines the Chinese aggression of 1962 and the developments culminating in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. Since present-day Nagaland, Meghalaya and Mizoram remained within Assam’s political geography for part of this period, the volume also illuminates the evolution of Northeast India.

Drawing on government archives, official correspondence, legislative debates, newspapers and recorded statements of political and social leaders, the book possesses a strong documentary foundation. Although dense and occasionally uneven, it is a serious scholarly work that rewards careful reading. Professor Saikia and the contributing scholars deserve appreciation for producing an indispensable reference for understanding postcolonial Assam and the historical roots of its continuing debates over migration, identity, autonomy and regional development. Its relevance extends far beyond the period covered.

Today, I met Hon’ble Chancellor of EdTech Skills University Shri Vishva Lochan Agarwal and Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Himanshu Panchal at Janata Bhawan. The new private university, being developed in Tinsukia, was established under the EdTech Skills University Act, 2025.

We exchanged views on skill-based education and opportunities for Assam’s youth. I conveyed my best wishes for the university’s successful journey.

Attended the Consultative Meet with Assam’s DIETs on Quality Education at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara. The meeting reviewed DIET initiatives over the past two years, including PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan, competency-based assessment and Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN).

I emphasised the need to harness emerging technologies to improve teaching and learning and create quality educational resources in the mother tongue. Bodhan AI, being taken forward in collaboration with the Education Department, will promote AI-enabled learning and help teachers create and share resources in local languages.

Vidya Samiksha Kendras will also be established in every DIET, using AI, Machine Learning and integrated data for real-time monitoring and improved learning outcomes.

উপন্যাসখনৰ আৰম্ভণিতেই বজাৰত ৰবাব টেঙাৰ অস্বাভাৱিক মূল্যৰ প্ৰসংগ উত্থাপন কৰি লেখকে যুদ্ধৰ দূৰৱৰ্তী অভিঘাতক অসমৰ সাধাৰণ মানুহৰ দৈনন্দিন জীৱনৰ সৈতে সংযোগ কৰিছে—

Visited Biswanath College today along with HMLA Shri @pallablochandas and interacted with the faculty and students.

Situated in the heart of Biswanath town, the college has nearly 80 bighas of land and a proud legacy spanning 66 years since its establishment in 1960. It has immense potential to grow into a leading multidisciplinary educational institution.

I urged the entire college community to embrace this vision and work collectively and dedicatedly towards achieving it.
