@moonwalkhes@_TheP1pe_0w_ Japan on Friday, but those figures are worrying because it could mean negative figures tomorrow
Just 3 million away from the big target too
MICHAEL has crossed the $900M mark at the global box office this morning.
It’s finally releasing in Japan this Friday, where it’s projected to hit ~$10M on its opening weekend.
@KimIfYaNasty The Weeknd is a good spiritual successor to Michael. There will only ever be one Michael, but the music influences are clear to see and Michael would have loved his discography.
@_lrmusic@Jimbobjeffe@MasterTainment But cinema has had a stellar year overall.
Project Hail Mary, DWPII, Obsession, Backrooms, Michael and the Mario Galaxy Movie have all done great numbers.
But most of those defy the lazy blockbuster template.
@_lrmusic@Jimbobjeffe@MasterTainment Movie executives just don’t understand what makes a box office hit.
The big studios bet against Michael because they naively believed people had music biopic fatigue, only for Graham King to repeat Bohemian Rhapsody’s success.
Mortal Kombat II, Grogu and Masters all flopped.
@aakashgupta Studios are constantly learning the wrong lessons.
It was the same with a wave of music biopics which convinced people there was music biopic fatigue, only for Graham King to repeat Bohemian Rhapsody’s success with Michael.
@MJFellowship Only upside is that PVOD might boost the music streaming numbers and that might in turn promote the movie further.
It may also help Michael Jackson reach higher peaks on Spotify.
Keep seeing the film in cinemas though, as it’s vital it becomes the first biopic to reach $1bn.

SHAMONE!!!
KING OF POP #MichaelJackson’s music biopic #MICHAEL nears 900M mark, ready to beat #BohemianRhapsody next WED as highest grossing music biopic of ALL TIME at Global #BoxOffice!
STRONG 18.8M* overseas on 7th weekend (15.4M from Uni markets, 3.4M from Russia), a -28% drop (vs #BohemianRhapsody’s 20M, -31.5%, #Oppenheimer’s 49.7M, +63.5%), after a $4.5M debut in Russia, for a 543.7M intl. cume over 83 markets, with #Japan on JUN 12 yet to join.
Allied to its 354.3M cume in the U.S., the biopic with a 200M production price tag not including marketing hits a 898M global cume (vs #BohemianRhapsody’s 635M, #Oppenheimer’s 851.3M at same point)
Next THU, it will beat #BohemianRhapsody’s 903.7M Global run as BIGGEST music biopic of ALL TIME & #2 highest grossing biopic overall!
950M+ locked!🔒
1B+ reliant on #Russia & #Japan.
Eyeing a 950M-1B run until we see how how comparable to #BohemianRhapsody’s its performance in #Japan (where BohRhap grossed 115.7M) end up being and how digital release affects legs from next week onwards, if at all.
@MJInnocentUK The film is a threat to the streaming business model because it demonstrates the success of cinematic events.
Event cinema can’t be nearly replicated on the small screen, so some might wish to stop it setting precedents.
@MJInnocentUK The timing of this is designed to distract attention from the movie.
Keep the eye on the prize. One billion box office is the goal. If people keep going, he gets there soon.
@MJFellowship Needs to get at least $920-950m global before Japan to guarantee a billion imo.
Especially with N€tflix potentially sabotaging box office takings in the final weeks of its run!
@icemanDrizzy06@laryngitisjordy@KimIfYaNasty Kind of irrelevant when every physical album purchase would have been played at least a dozen to hundreds of times.
That’s a lot more song plays than streams.
