I’ve played this game for around 10 years and have streamed for 6+.
Tarkov is a game like no other I’ve played. I came from the early days of Rust and Arma 2 Day Z, I grew up playing survival shooters from the very beginning so I’d like to share my thoughts on the current state of the game and maybe some solutions to the problems we’re currently facing but hey I’m a streamer so take it with a grain of salt. Also I’m going to mainly focus on PVP and SEASONAL since these are my preferred game modes.
Tarkov we can all agree is in a pretty rough state right now. The negatives seem to be outweighing the positives so lemme throw some examples I think we can agree on : Cheaters, De Sync, Server Issues, Optimization, Economy and so forth. Seasons I think are a great idea but I want to ask @nikgeneburn what he expected the player distribution to be before releasing seasons because I think he expected much higher as he prefers PVP.
Let’s jump into my first issue with Seasons: Incentive. So as we understand there is a special Kord Breach task line that unlocks limited time gear for playing seasons which is perfect and gets people onboard seasons but what comes after that? What other incentive is there besides achievements? We’re already seeing Seasons start to fall off the first month as most people are finishing the Kord Bread task line. This season is supposed to last 5-6 months. Most people I’ve talked to already finished the task line and hop back on main game to focus on other grinds. This seems like a “streamer problem” but think for a second as to why you would continue to play seasons when you unlocked the limited time content. This leads me to my second issue
Economy. The Tarkov economy in my opinion is in the worst state I’ve ever seen in my whole 10 years playing this game. If you want to grind money the most effective method right now is to either play Ice Breaker or roam streets and pick up hideout items. I hate to say it but there is no thrill in looting most of the time outside of finding a Marked Key, Bitcoin and maybe a LedX. It’s a chore wanting to grind an ending or even the new seasonal achievement. There needs to be a different Rarity in the game similar to ABI and Delta Force where each classification of item ( Medical, Industrial, Weapon, Food, Clothing ) all have items that have insane value for example : A “Crashed Drone” with sensitive data which could be sold for crazy money or Bartered for end game gear, or even a “Broken Gun Prototype” that can again be sold for insane amounts of cash or used to Barter gear. You get the idea. This would make every map in tarkov viable as every Box, Duffle, Jacket and so on could have items worth crazy amounts. This brings me to my next topic,
Lightkeeper. Please make lightkeeper an actual trader who incentivizes the late game grind. IMO he should have his own tab when unlocked just like every other trader and have barters for dog tags or even the special items I was talking about above for special gear, this gear rotates every reset and is never the same. He should also have dailies just like other trader. Lightkeeper is the mastermind behind it all, he needs to be more important and impact Tarkov like he does in the lore. Next I wanna talk about the overall
State of PVP. In my honest opinion I don’t think PVP is that great at the moment. Of course it still has its highs but most of the time even winning feels like a loss. Rubber banding is crazy at the moment making fights feel inconsistent, players on high ping seem to have a massive advantage when playing aggressive and groups got a massive buff with shared tasks making solo play dreadful. In all honesty I don’t know what to improve here besides hoping servers become more stable and favor those with lower ping. Solo play will always be a disadvantage so this won’t change and same goes to Ratting. I feel as if more people have adapted to Ratting as you can’t overcome these issues and I don’t blame them.
First 2–3 weeks of the season were AMAZING, but...
Since then, so many things have crept through, and the lack of fine-tuning seems like it’s pushed people away and even created many balancing problems.
I do think that the PvP within itself is so poor that players would rather fight AI on PvE than have to deal with players on PvP who don’t move or interact with the gameplay.
So many years of punishing mechanics have led to a meta that is so defined that it ruins the enjoyment for many unless you adapt to it, and in my opinion, I think this is where EFT becomes a drain on people’s enjoyment.
After playing many hours of Icebreaker, it’s made me realise more and more that a PvE experience against difficult AI is way more fun than dying to players who don’t move and camp.
Now, yes, I understand I have contributed to that as a means of content, and in some ways, been hypocritical, but from my perspective there is only so much annoyance you can take in a game like EFT before you learn to adapt or move on.
I think this is a big problem for a lot of players. They simply don’t want to deal with it when they can just PvE with their friends.
I personally don’t think PvE was a perfect addition, but as time has gone by, I kind of understand the reasoning now.
All of the things that make EFT frustrating lead players into ways of winning easier because the game is promoting that type of gameplay because of things like mechanics, features, bugs, desync, etc.
I was really hoping BSG would put a big emphasis on perks and pushing players to improve at the game, but I think it’s set in stone unless BSG is willing to compromise and lay off on some restrictions.
At EFT’s core, I believe the game is a true PvP game, but so many years have gone by since that game captivated myself and many others.
The quality of fights within raids has been reduced to using the cheesiest methods of winning, and I think that one of the main problems with people not wanting to play PvP is that it’s just not appealing when most raids become predictable within how players play a raid:
Get a good key, camp that area, wait for players, kill them and profit.
2019–2020 EFT was the best PvP experience of any game I’ve ever played. Full raids, dead players everywhere, and an urgency to be present for a fight so you could potentially get tons of player gear. Lucrative maps such as Shoreline, Reserve, etc. The game was overflowing with stimulation and interaction.
I think EFT is 10x better now than it’s ever been, but it comes at a cost to the PvP experience. We just don’t have an enjoyable endgame with player interaction anymore.
I could be completely wrong, but from my perspective, if nothing starts to change, I could honestly see EFT becoming a way more popular game designed around PvE, which is sad to me, but the signs are there.
50% of players partaking in PvE over seasons while the main focus of the game is PvP is crazy, It just goes to show how much the audience has changed and also how much people are willing to put up with until they make the switch.
I always use old Lvndmark videos as an example of what we lost. Those types of raids are what kept people entertained, both from a viewer perspective and by playing themselves.
There is so much valuable feedback in those old videos that BSG could use to revitalise the PvP interactions, but I feel like they probably don’t care.
Big long yap, I know, but I thought I’d share some thoughts.
Overall, EFT is one of the best games of all time, but I do think there are some major concerns for the future of the game, that being said I am looking forward to future content and seasons but changes are needed I think even down to a balance point of view.
@nikgeneburn@polomarcopoloma Let’s improve it bro 👊 I am confident PVP could be more popular if certain things get changed.
I am willing to give as much feedback as needed, not saying you need to listen to me or anyone else but I am always passionate to give my opinion on what I think could help 👍
