🏛️ Baalbek, les mégalithes qui font de l’ombre à l’empire Romain

Imaginez, amis, le tell (étymologiquement la colline) de Baalbek, au Liban. Onze mille ans d’Histoire humaine foulés sous vos pas.

Les Cananéens y invoquaient Hadad, le dieu de l’orage qui fend le ciel ; les Grecs y bâtirent Héliopolis, cité du Soleil ; les Romains y érigèrent le plus vaste temple de Jupiter, père des dieux.

Mais ce qui fascine n’est pas le marbre romain triomphant. C’est ce qu’il cache.
Ce sûr quoi il est bâti. Dans le podium, le Trilithon : trois blocs de 19 mètres de long, 800 tonnes chacun, scellés comme par magie. En dessous, une assise de 350 tonnes. Au-dessus, les colonnes romaines, 19 mètres de gloire… documentées, célébrées, vantées dans mille inscriptions.

Et pourtant, sur ces titans, pas un mot. Aucun centurion, aucun architecte impérial n’a gravé : « J’ai soulevé l’invraisemblable. » Les Romains, qui consignaient chaque aqueduc et chaque victoire, ont scellé cette prouesse d’ingénierie dans le silence.
Étrange.

À 900 mètres, dans la carrière, trois autres colosses attendent depuis des millénaires. La « Pierre de la Femme Enceinte » : mille tonnes, encore agrippée à la roche mère. La « Pierre du Sud » : mille deux cent quarante-deux tonnes. Et la « Pierre Oubliée », exhumée en 2014 par l’Institut archéologique allemand : mille six cent cinquante tonnes – la cinquième plus grande jamais taillée par l’homme.
Abandonnées. Comme si les bâtisseurs avaient fui, ou que le projet eût dépassé son concepteur.

Les légendes arabes murmurent des histoires de djinns enceintes. Une femme prétendit connaître le secret… à condition qu’on la nourrît jusqu’à son accouchement. Personne n’osa.

Comment ont-ils fait ? Et pourquoi ce mutisme romain, plus pesant que la pierre elle-même ?

The Great Pyramid was once sheathed entirely in highly polished white limestone - a casing so precisely fitted that for thousands of years nobody could penetrate it. The joinery between the casing stones was exquisitely tight. There was no gap large enough to insert anything that could be used as leverage. As a result, while erosion was actively working on the exposed surfaces at the base of the pyramid outside the casing, no erosion was occurring beneath it. The casing was functioning exactly as designed - protecting the structure beneath from the elements with a precision that modern construction would struggle to replicate.

That changed approximately 675 years ago when a major earthquake centered roughly beneath what is now Crete struck the region. Randall does not detail the full consequences here but the implication is clear - the seismic event that had been unable to penetrate for millennia was finally compromised. The earthquake that loosened and eventually led to the removal of the casing stones is the event that transformed the Great Pyramid from the gleaming white monument it was for thousands of years into the stepped, exposed structure visible today. What we see at Giza is not what was built. It is what remained after a Mediterranean earthquake finally broke open something that had been sealed tight for longer than most civilizations have existed.
