India was never the largest or even second-largest buyer of Russian energy. Yet the Trump administration singled out India for punitive action, aiming to force New Delhi to ramp up purchases of American energy.

That pressure has succeeded spectacularly. Data from last month shows that the U.S. has emerged as India’s largest source of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

However, American energy — once freight costs are included — is more expensive than supplies from elsewhere, underscoring how such imports are driven more by political signaling than by economic logic.

In a way, history is repeating itself. Pressure from the first Trump presidency drove India’s oil imports from Iran to zero, despite Tehran’s longstanding discounts. That shift helped turn the U.S. into a significant supplier of crude and petroleum products to India, a trend that held until Russia began offering discounted barrels following the outbreak of the Ukraine war.

Today, India’s energy imports — among the hardest hit by the fallout from Trump’s Iran war — are increasingly being shaped by the selective granting or rejection of sanctions waivers.
