RETHINK’S NATIONAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT FOR YOUNG WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER
It's been over 10 years since our first needs assessment and it's time to reassess just how much has changed and where gaps still exist for young women.

This #MBC Day, we want to shine a light on what’s happening below the surface for those living with MBC.
On our Instagram, we’ve posted an MBC iceberg template so those living with MBC can share their truth.

We’re excited to be at Australia House today with @BCNAPinkLady and @rethinktweet for the launch of #CountUsIn, an international pledge which calls on Govts to make sure everyone living with secondary breast cancer is counted, recognised and supported.
https://t.co/POLItJ9oZP
Yesterday I was honoured to be invited to Australia House for the launch of
"Advancing Global Visibility for Metastatic Breast Cancer" alongside other patient advocates, campaigners, clinicians and policy makers @BreastCancerNow and leading breast cancer organisations from Australia @BCNAPinkLady and Canada @rethinktweet have united to pledge to count and advocate for those living with MBC.... to finally count is in.
These three counties arranged this all within just six weeks!
Their pledge is to continue to advocate for....
"1) Prioritise secondary breast cancer data collection and reporting
2) Collaborate internationally - allowing researchers and governments to share knowledge and support consistent approaches
3) Integrate secondary breast cancer across global initiatives
4) Ensure people living with secondary breast cancer are visible within health systems"
After being diagnosed in 2022 | was flabbergasted to discover that there is no data collected on those living with MBC!
Even though it was made mandatory here in 2013 it still isn't being done. So much of what we do in life is driven by data, and yet one of the causes of death in women under 50 has none.
We are only counted when we die.
It is estimated that 61k women (and some men) are living with MBC in the UK, but it could be far more.
Basically we remain invisible in the system. How can treatments, research, services, investment, the workforce, care pathways and quality of life be tailored and progress without it?
It was fantastic to hear the international panel pledge to call on government's to make sure that everyone living with metastatic breast cancer is "counted, recognised, and supported"
I look forward to seeing the impact and progress this has and hope that soon we will no longer hidden in the system.
We are valued members and contributors to society and we deserve so much more #CountUsIn
And to follow on, all of these incredibly patient advocates are women living with metastatic breast cancer.
We are asking @UKLabour for our MBC data to finally be counted so that treatments and survival rates can progress. It might not benefit us during our lifetime (though I hope it will!) but future patients need this to start urgently.
