On November 1, 1959, exactly 67 years ago today, 3,000 people gathered to dedicate a new Urakami Cathedral in Nagasaki.
The rebuilding had not been easy.
Bishop Aijirō Yamaguchi had traveled to the United States to raise money because the local Catholic community could not afford reconstruction on its own.
He spent months traveling around America, collecting substantial donations.
He even preached at every Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Paul in Minnesota on December 11, 1955.
This was a man whose very own mother had been killed inside the cathedral when the atomic bomb struck.
Nagasaki remains Japan’s historic heartland of Catholicism.
Let’s join its Catholics in prayer today as they celebrate the anniversary of their cathedral’s dedication.
We honestly DO NOT talk enough about how God will give you a completely ordinary day. No emergencies, no devastating phone calls, no chaos. Just peace.
That alone is a blessing.
St. Raphael, healer of the sick, pray for us. 🕊️
St. Raphael the Archangel is invoked for all who are sick in soul or body, that they may be healed, as Tobias’s father was healed.
“O Raphael, Celestial Medicine, companion of travelers and healer of the sick! Guide us safely through the perils of this life, and cure the wounds of our souls, that we may enter into the eternal joy of the Lord.”

If you are struggling with anxiety, listen to this piece. Within about 30 seconds, your breathing will begin to change. It is the silence between the notes that calms the body.
One of the coolest things we’ve ever been a part of. It changed my life radically, and I think it’s going to change the world.

During Mass at The Grotto’s annual Blessing of the Animals on Sept. 20, one husky couldn’t resist joining in when the music began. In a now-viral video filmed by attendee Blanca Gallardo, the pup lets out a series of enthusiastic howls as a priest sings — prompting the priest to walk over and hold a microphone near the furry vocalist.
The moment has become an internet hit, with the Instagram Reel drawing 7.1 million views and 741,000 likes. The husky’s owner and identity were not initially known, though Gallardo said she attended the blessing with her own dog, Phoebe.
The clip’s comments quickly turned the impromptu duet into a heavenly punchline. One viewer, @kindsi, wrote: “The priest sang, ‘all creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and let us sing’ and the husky said ‘HaleAWOOOOOyah!’”
Honestly, the dog was just following directions.
The Blessing of the Animals took place at 3:30 p.m. in The Grotto Plaza. The annual event welcomes people and pets of all faiths and celebrates the “joy, beauty, love, fidelity, encouragement and comfort” that animal companions bring into people’s lives.
And if this dog had anything to say about it, that comfort apparently comes with a powerful set of lungs.
Today, on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, it seems only right that one enthusiastic husky reminded everyone at Mass that all creatures are invited to lift up their voices, even if that voice is an awe-inspiring “awoooo.”

In 1965, Bishop Fulton Sheen warned about the dangers of toxic empathy, saying it would ruin the United States:
“False compassion… is a pity shown not to the mugged, but to the mugger; not to the family of the murdered, but to the murderer.”
